I need some tunes! Any suggestions for an old rocker? I have a
X-mas gift I need to use-iTune card, do have an ipod, but how do you mesh them? I am clueless.
And is there a tune you absolutely love?
Thanks!

1. syd barrett?
I don't know exactly what you mean by "rocker", so maybe that's a bad suggestion (he was the founder of pink floyd and had great solo albums in a 60's psychedelic sort of way). I'm no help with the technology though - I'm still a bit skeptical about using my computer as a cd player. Or you can buy my band's album from a few years ago (bunnyhug, "like kissing an ashtray"), though I'd imagine an old rocker wouldn't like early naughties synth-pop.

some floyd fans love syd barrett, and others hate his stuff - just depends what elements of the band you dig.

2. Well, first thing is to plug your iPod into the computer.
You'll be asked to create an account for the iTunes store.

I haven't bought anything from iTunes yet; I've just downloaded CD's to iTunes, and then loaded them onto my iPod, so.....

And, how old a rocker are you? Not sure what I should suggest.

5. I've done exactly wht you've done; I've used my CDs to load my
'nano', and now I can upgrade. And I'm close to 52 years old. So pretty old, but I'll bet I downloaded most everything when I thought it was legal. Thanks! I want to hear Joni Mitchell's 'Shine', but I need suggestions.
I HAVE to go to bed! But perhaps we'll both find some answers.

7. Honey, you are NOT old!
I'm 51, and don't think I am.

Anyway, for me, I love the Motown sound; and pretty much anything from the 60's in that time period.

Also love a lot of the 70's stuff (and -- believe it or not -- the 80's stuff.)

My iPod currently contains Cyndi Lauper, Santana, Jimmy Buffett, Dwight Yoakum, U2, Queen, The Brian Setzer Orchestra, The Police, and a Southern Rock compilation,

If nothing else, I'm somewhat eclectic.

Cold Shot is definitely on my list of favorites. Ain't Gone 'N' Give Up On Love is another along with Life Without You (I told my husband he better expect to hear it at his funeral.) I know a lot of folks don't care for the stuff that came out after he died, but I still think Boot Hill is an awesome cut.

I do loves me some SRV!

12. Indeed
I was hooked on Thorogood from the first time I heard him — his cover of "One Bourbon, One Scotch, One Beer." But I think I like best his covers of "It Wasn't Me" and "Cocaine Blues," both pure-D rockabilly.

Same with the Stray Cats. Saw them for the first time on the old ABC show "Fridays" and went absolutely nuts.

Hell, I even like psychobilly. :D

17. I can understand that
In those days, Setzer's pompadour was quite overstated, almost as if he were making fun of the style. I never got Phantom's gimmick of stand-up drumming with just a snare, a bass and a crash cymbal, either. (Interestingly, Wikipedia sez Phantom — whose real name is James McDonnell — studied jazz drumming with Mousie Alexander, who was with Benny Goodman.)

But they had the sound down, and it really appealed to me — maybe because I'm from those years between authentic rockabilly and retro bands like the Stray Cats and the Cramps. I may have heard the real thing when I was very young and was then deprived of it as it went out of style.

(These were also part of me when I was young. My cousin was in a band in 1962 that covered them. He was the pianist.)

One of his early CDs (More Million $ellers) is kind of gimmicky, imo, but I really like Number One Hit Record! and one of his more recent ones, The Melody, which has rockabilly and country sounding-tracks, including covers of Buddy Holly's "Tell Me How" and Willie Nelson's "I Never Cared for You." He's a great guitar player, too.

23. iTunes
Edited on Wed Jan-09-08 08:13 AM by RainDog
to redeem a card, you just click on the iTunes store icon till you see the front page for the store. on the right side of the screen you'll see a list under "Quick Links." Click on "Redeem." You'll then see a screen that asks you to type the number on the back of the card (scrape off that metallic-like stuff.) Then it will ask you if you want to redeem the card and you say yes and it credits your account.

edit to add- first you have to set up your acct with a password, etc.

If you click on a song you can hear a snippet before you buy it. if you want to do individual songs, you click on the "buy" icon (same with an album, but in that case you click on the album cover in the section above the list of songs.)

once you've redeemed the card, when you go back you click on "music" or "movies" or whatever and you can search for items, or you can click on cd covers to see and/or buy it.

******

as far as music- in addition to SRV or george T and the destroyers, you might like Susan Tedeschi's cd "Just Won't Burn." She had a radio song that played a lot on that one but the whole cd is good.

Jimi Hendrix would be my choice. Something with Voodoo Child on it. -I have Kiss the Sky and Blues and recommend both. don't know if they have them both on iTunes.

Buddy Guy's "Sweet Tea" is a favorite blues cd for me.

Elvis Costello - Armed Forces. His newer-ish stuff that I love is "When I was Cruel" (a GREAT cd, imo) and Delivery Man. He does duets with Lucinda Wiliams and Emmy Lou Harris on that one.

oh, if you don't have Car Wheels on a Gravel Road, from Williams, I would also suggest that. It's alternative country - she won a grammy for that one.

don't know if you like Tom Waits' voice, but his Mule Variations is excellent, imo. Or The Breeders "Last Splash" but they may be too weird for your tastes. Don't know.

retro old- Wanda Jackson (queen of rockabilly) is the woman who sang "Fujiyama Mama" Or Big Mama Thornton - Hound Dog was written for her. If you want some rockabilly, Wayne Hancock isn't old but he's rockabilly. One of his songs woke up the astronauts one time.

btw, you might want to go to YouTube to hear some of the people listed here.

Bob Dylan, of course.

If they have "Etta James Rocks the House" I would say to definitely get that one. Live, 1963. greatgreatgreat.

Oh, Ray Charles' I Got a Woman is another cd that can't help but make you smile and sing along - at least for me.

Derek and the Dominos Layla is a classic.

Beck's Odelay is also a newer classic.

Howlin' Wolf is great.

Leonard Cohen "I'm Your Man." just because it has "Everybody Knows" and that song from a Lorca poem.

Neil Young - lots of different options. When he was with Crazy Horse he did mostly rock.

another classic- Van Morrison's Astral Weeks.

Talking Heads Life During Wartime. -- or they have a greatest hits double cd...

anyway, I could go on, but those are some suggestions from me.

good luck and have fun!

34. well, not sure how you define "rocker" but here are my choices (mostly 70's)
* if you like Elvis Costello, get Joe Jackson's Look Sharp Album. Songs I like are "Fools in Love" "One More Time" "Sunday Papers" or "Got The Time" although the whole album is great - high energy. Think Steely Dan does the Clash with Elvis Costello. Also, the track "Friday" from I'm the Man is great too.

* If you like old rock/rockabilly, check out Joe Strummer's (from the Clash) old band, The 101ers. Favorite song is "Keys to Your Heart"

* If you like Queen and Bowie, check out some Roxy Music from the 70's. Favorite songs "Love is the Drug" "2HB" "Virginia Plain" and "Mother of Pearl" but there are a lot of greats.

* If you like latin music at all and the Talking Heads, check out something from David Byrne's solo career. "You and Eye" is a great song, as is "Miss America" "Rose Tattoo" and "Twisting in the Wind" (all from different albums)

* Since you mentioned the 80's, check out The The's "Soul Mining" album. Not a real rocker, but a good album. "This is the Day" and "Soul Mining" are great cuts.

If you want something a bit heavier, I suggest Generation X (their big hits were "Dancing With Myself" and "Kiss Me Deadly") or The Buzzcocks. Both fun pop punk from the 70's (when it was good).

Or if you want more mellow, check out Todd Snider or John Prine - both good songwriters in the "funny good old boy" vein but without being bad country music.

48. you want newer stuff?
I like Death Cab for Cutie. My favorite song from them, unfortunately, is from a Believer music sampler.

I really like M. Ward. He's got a unique voice, imo. -Andrew Bird -mysterious production of eggs or weather systems are my two favorites from him.

Neko Case, maybe? my favorite is Blacklisted. She also sings with The New Pornagraphers and they're more rock. Sam Phillips' A Boot and a Shoe is good. She reminds me of Harry Nilsson.

--I mention those b/c you said you wanted the new Joni Mitchell. Oh, and a great cd is the Cowboy Junkies' Trinity Sessions. the other one from them I like alot is Lay It Down. Also not so new but good if you don't have is Yo La Tengo's I Can Hear the Heart Beating as One. Their new one is something like I Hate you and I'm gonna kick your Ass.

Beck's Guero is also good. I like Cat Power. again, I don't know how much these qualify as "rock" as in SRV, etc. but they're good.

Elliott Smith...The Decembrists...The Shins, maybe? They've only made two cds. Oh, The White Stripes are stripped down and good.

Newish rockabilly from Rosie Flores. Wanda Jackson is her idol. She plays the shite out of a guitar.

61. the one must have song for any "old rocker"...

Jethro Tull: "Too old to rock n roll, too young to die"
http://youtube.com/watch?v=hdXH_tfa4Uc

The old Rocker wore his hair too long,
wore his trouser cuffs too tight.
Unfashionable to the end drank his ale too light.
Death's head belt buckle yesterday's dreams
the transport caf' prophet of doom.
Ringing no change in his double-sewn seams
in his post-war-babe gloom.

Now he's too old to Rock'n'Roll but he's too young to die.

He once owned a Harley Davidson and a Triumph Bonneville.
Counted his friends in burned-out spark plugs
and prays that he always will.
But he's the last of the blue blood greaser boys
all of his mates are doing time:
married with three kids up by the ring road
sold their souls straight down the line.

And some of them own little sports cars
and meet at the tennis club do's.
For drinks on a Sunday work on Monday.
They've thrown away their blue suede shoes.

Now they're too old to Rock'n'Roll and they're too young to die.

So the old Rocker gets out his bike
to make a ton before he takes his leave.
Up on the A1 by Scotch Corner
just like it used to be.
And as he flies tears in his eyes
his wind-whipped words echo the final take
and he hits the trunk road doing around 120
with no room left to brake.

And he was too old to Rock'n'Roll but he was too young to die.
No, you're never too old to Rock'n'Roll if you're too young to die.
