Britney Will Get Help -- Like It or Not

Posted Jan 9th 2008 6:30PM by TMZ Staff

TMZ has learned family members and professionals in Britney's life are working as a team to get her mental help -- either voluntarily or involuntarily -- for treatment of what appears to be a severe bipolar disorder.

We're told it's going to happen one way or the other, and fast. So far, Britney refuses to commit herself voluntarily, but the team is persisting.

Sources say they are considering "a number of options," some of which are "creative."

The most extreme option -- going to court and getting an order forcing Britney into in-patient treatment. That would be the last ditch effort.

If involuntary commitment is the only option, Brit must be picked up by cops -- again -- on a "5150," meaning she's a danger to herself or others. Then, while she's in the hospital, health care professionals can go to the County Public Guardian, who can then go to court and ask for what's called a "conservatorship." The conservator would then basically assume control of Brit's life.

If the judge grants the conservatorship, Brit could be involuntarily committed to a mental hospital. Again, that's not the only option and various alternatives are being discussed right now.

1. If she's been playing everybody for chumps in order to get the kids ditched, she's in trouble now.

11. Yup. It's called a "cyclothymic personality" disorder
It consists of mood swings not accounted for by life events, but is not as severe as bipolar illness.

8. Actually, she may HAVE bipolar disorder, which may have been
covered up initially by alcohol and drugs.

Not saying that the use of those two things aren't a problem for her; I believe they ARE.

But sometimes, they can also cover up bipolar disorder for a long time. I have a client who is bipolar. That wasn't discovered until he was in a physical therapy program where he was weaned off his narcotic meds, which he had been taking for pain. When he was clear of the drugs, he was diagnosed with bipolar disorder. He's doing fine, as he is on meds for that, but he had absolutely no idea that he had that until he stopped the drugs.

So it could very well be that Brit has bipolar disorder. If so, she definitely needs to be treated. AND, she needs to stay off the booze and drugs.

13. they don't
but many people with mental illnesses use drugs or alcohol to self-medicate, which can exacerbate their illness, which can lead to more drug or alcohol use. it can be a nasty cycle

17. A lot of mentally ill people self-medicate
With booze and drugs, because substance abuse temporarily makes them feel better. Then they wind up with two problems: the addiction on top of the underlying mental disorder.

It's not at all uncommon to have a dual diagnosis, which is why charlatans like Dr. Phil are so dangerous.

6. Not if they can't find her:

A mentally unstable Britney Spears and her new paparazzi boyfriend, Adnan Ghalib, have once again left Los Angeles.

The pair were seen boarding a private plane at Van Nuys Airport on Wednesday.

Destination unknown as of now.

7. My sister is bipolar and it took years to get her help.
She wasn't hurting herself or anyone else so the courts couldn't do anything. When she was first diagnosed, she would take her medicine for a while, then quit because she thought she was better. It was a vicious cycle that is still going on, though her "episodes" aren't nearly as frequent as they used to be. She has lived in the same place for years and knows her neighbors and the area. Change sends her into a tailspin.

I wish Britney and her family well. They've got a very tough road ahead of them.

9. This is a trainwreck I keep trying NOT to watch!
It's a sick commentary about what our society is fixated on. I'd love to see her go "Greta Garbo" on us and become a recluse...same with Lindsey Lohan and all the other troubled girls.

10. And hopefully, they will seek that refuge in a treatment center.
Or a psych facility.

The need help, especially Miss Brit.

15. I hope she does get help.
I would not at all be surprised to see her diagnosed with bipolar disorder.

For many years, I suspected my ex (my oldest daughter's father) had bipolar disorder, but he was over 50 before he got diagnosed. His treatment, including medication, made an enormous difference.
