Dude gets PWNED by his MOM.
'Meanest mom on the planet' sells son's car -- after finding booze in it
By ABBY SIMONS • REGISTER STAFF WRITER • January 9, 2008

It was early last month when Jane Hambleton of Fort Dodge found the bottle under the front seat of her 19-year-old son's pride and joy.

Her next move was a call to The Des Moines Register's classified advertising department:

OLDS 1999 Intrigue

"Totally uncool parents who obviously don't love teenage son, selling his car. Only driven for 3 weeks before snoopy mom who needs to get a life found booze under front seat. $3,700/offer. Call meanest mom on the planet."

The son soon found himself on foot. And the meanest mom on the planet became the target of accolades from across Iowa and beyond.

I salute this Queen of Pwnage. She should get Mom of the Year. :patriot:

3. I, uh, KINDA wish my mom had done the same?
...Many years later, I look back at my foolish (and dangerous) teenaged idiocy and regret that I seldom had to pay a price for behavior I now regret, and in some ways am still dealing with. I don't blame my parents-- they did their best-- but I think this lady has done the right thing.

4. As a parent of a teen, I say, GOOD FOR HER!
She laid down two ground rules for the car, and even if it was not his alcohol, both were broken.

5. As I said on the other thread this story was posted in...
I totally have to remember that if and when I have kids. Good way to scare them into behaving properly. :)

Of course, with my luck I'll actually succeed at raising kids who don't care that much about posessions and I won't have any leverage on 'em. :\

10. Good point. A car isn't like other posessions.

You actually USE it for stuff. In the case of teenagers, they'd use it to get around, hang out, and if they're lucky, get lucky in the back seat.

Although if my kids are anything like me, they'll be smart and end up dating someone whose parents leave for the weekends a lot so they won't have to fumble around in the back seat... :P

12. Teenagers don't consider them posessions..cars represent FREEDOM.
You were a smart kid. I dated a guy who's parents worked nights. ;)

14. Eh, it was just luck of the draw in my case. :)
The ironic part though: the reason her parents were gone most weekends is because they ran a swinger's bar. She didn't find out that the bar was anything different than a regular bar until she was a bit older though. :)

13. That, or there's something about mothers who hold their children accountable for their mistakes
so they actually learn from them... :P

If my parents could have afforded to buy me a car in the first place, I could totally see them doing something like that.

Which teaches me responsibility. It's my responsibility not to get caught doing something stupid. :)

21. Our oldest is 13 and can't wait to get her permit...
Mryouthere and I have started drawing up the official "contract" for driving priveledges. No smoking, speeding, racing, drinking ,lack of seatbelt wearing, donuts, ramping, off-roading or any other "abuse" of the vehicle or driving priveledge (as we determine it). No one other than you is allowed to drive the car. If we see, hear of, or suspect you of violating you are guilty until proven innocent and driving priveleges are permanently revoked-you can get your own damn car when you're 18 and you can pay for it.
It's tough, but if they want to drive, dem's gonna'be da'berries. We make it our business to be hardasses about stuff like this. We said when they reached driving age we would provide them with a car to drive (not buy them one) and carry the insurance. If they do not violate the "rules" we will transfer ownership of the car to them when they turn 18. We are considering adding a clause that if they do lose driving priveledges, they have to pay us back everything we've shelled out for drivers ed, liscensing, insurance and repairs.

22. I think the only concrete rule my parents set was 'no tickets that are obviously your fault'
but the rest of that stuff was implied. :) And they never gave us a car, we only got to drive theirs every now and then.

If it was something little, like a cop decides to be a jerk and give you a ticket for going 56 in the 55, my parents probably would have let it go. But anything that was because we did something stupid... that woulda been it.

As a result: we made sure not to get caught doing anything stupid. :)

but something like "doing donuts in the cemetary"...I'd get a little pissed about that. ;)

The cemetary is for parking and making out, the empty parking lot is for donuts. Duh. :)

8. Etymology
The word "pwn" arose and spread as a common typo of the word "own," due to the proximity of the 'p' and 'o' keys on a standard English keyboard. <1><2>

Because I never knew what the hell this meant.
Until just now.

So in the end, I think the parents won this one.
