My Siamese cat is really, really sick
Izzy was fine yesterday, doing everything she could to hamper the installation of our new clothes dryer. She particpated in the unboxing of the dryer, walked half a dozen times over the electrical cord installation plans booklet and was very interested in what tool my husband selected from the tool box. She was a complete pest...as she always is!

This morning, she threw up a couple of times, which is pretty normal for her. Sometimes I think she likes the attention she gets when she starts to make that gagging noise.

Anyway, she was a bit listless this morning, but got progressively worse as the morning wore on. I did not like the way she looked or the way she was behaving, something was definetely wrong. We put her in our son's room curled up in the sleeping bag and I called the vet for a 3 PM appointment. Around 2 PM she fell off the bed and started screaming as only a Siamese can scream. She crawled under the bed and we had to take the bed apart to get to her. We put her on the couch and she was panting with her tongue hanging out and I got really scared and we rushed her to the vets. She kept trying to get into really weird positions on the car ride to the vet and kept screaming.

At the vets, he gave her a shot of valium to calm her down. It appears as of 5:30 PM she can't right herself and she still screams when the vet comes into the room. And she still is trying to get into a really weird uncomfortable upside down position. The vet thinks she might have ingested some poison, but for the life of me I can't think what that might be. She is very finicky, she's not a trash cat. I totally have a child proof home, there is nothing here that she could have gotten in to.

We got her as a stray, meaning she showed up at our house one day, some nine years ago. I think she might be 13 or 14.

Does anyone have any idea what might be wrong with her? Thanks in advance for any help you might give me. Here is a pic of the Izzinator.

1. No idea... sorry...
but I love Siamese cats and I'm so sorry you're going through this.

Here's hoping the vet can sort it out quickly and get your little Izzy to feeling better.

The poor thing. :(

3. Thanks red queen
Yes it is very scary. All of our cats die of old age. This is the first cat in a string of dozens who ever got sick. The average age here is like 16 and the cats die of old age. I just can't fathom what is wrong with her. There is some consensus between family and doctors that she might be a bit of a drama queen, but I just wish I knew what was ailing her. I will keep you posted. :) Thanks for your support.

4. Thanks Coyote...
You know we were talking about this today that some people shouldn't own animals cause it just hurts so much when when they leave this earth. This cat is just extraordinary. Siamese are just crazy things! Our lives have been so enriched by this idiot cat. I know I shouldn't get so attached to these things, but I can't help it. Thanks for your support!

5. And now the dog is really upset
He won't eat tonight. We are thinking it's because his best friend isn't here cause she's at the vets. It is just so darn sad.

6. Saying a prayer for your baby
Gosh I hope they can find out what's wrong.

We had a young cat that went through the screaming thing after she fell off a window sill some 18" to the floor. For her, it turned out she had bone spurs in her pelvic area and the fall made it worse. The spurs pressed into her colon and she avoided the bathroom due to the pain and ultimately ended up with megacolon. She had surgery to remove the spurs but the megacolon continued. We lost her when her incision became badly infected and after 2 months simply couldn't heal. I've never heard a cat scream like she did.

Have they done x-rays?

9. No, no xrays.
But I can't think where she might have fallen. The vet asked the same thing. We live in a log home with cathedral ceilings and exposed beams, but we would have heard her fall as my husband works nights until 4 am and then I get up. He also asked if she might have been hit by a car, but she hasn't been outside since Sept. Thanks so much for you input. This is truly a mystery.

8. Did they do x-rays?
Wondering if she ate something she shouldn't have while being a pest during dryer installation. Something that might be poking her somewhere along the digestive tract.

Hoping they figure it out and you kitty is feeling better fast.

10. Thanks CC
They did an external exam. Izzy just isn't the type to eat anything weird. She won't drink milk, doesn't eat luncheon meat, doesn't really eat anything at all unless it's her food. I think it was more like a stroke. I just don't know. But thanks so much for you concern.

17. I would ask anyway. I was thinking that maybe she
picked up something in her fur, then swallowed it when she was cleaning herself. I really hope she will be ok.

Reason I thought this is my nephews dog (6 mo pup really) fell off his bed Tues. Then she could not stand up without falling over or walk straight. We were all worried she had a stroke or was poisoned somehow. He rushed her to the vet. She had splinters and wood pieces in her tummy. She had chewed on a piece of barn wood the day before. They made her throw up and then checked again and gave her sub-q fluids for dehydration. Now she is fine and they are back to trying to teach her what is ok to chew and not ok to chew.

12. This is so strange
She isn't constipated and she has relieved herself several times with no complaint. It's almost like she has had a stroke and is very disoriented. Thanks applefrove for your imput though.

Do hope she is feeling better...have had three Siamese, but none ever had a problem like yours.
Have they taken x rays, etc to check for foreign objects? z

16. I'm a DU virgin but I love cats
Edited on Fri Jan-11-08 09:50 PM by Sy Kopath
My sister had a Himalayan cat and she and her cat were both very attached to each other. She had him for about five years when one day he just went crazy and would hiss at her and was jumping at her, and she actually had to hide in the closet because she was afraid of him. His personality just changed so quickly and he seemed to be directing some sort of anger towards her. He was okay with her husband but if my sister would walk in the room he would hiss.

They took him to the vet and they could find nothing wrong with him at all to explain his sudden change in behavior. They did run all sorts of tests on him and found nothing wrong with him. No evidence of stroke or brain abnormality. She ended up having to put him down because she was just too afraid of him. It took her a long, long time to get over it.

I hope your cat gets well soon.

19. I would worry about an obstruction/foreign object
Edited on Sat Jan-12-08 04:21 AM by Kristi1696
If she was hanging around the tool box, she could have ingested a screw, nail, bolt, what-have-you. Vomiting and listlessness are both signs of an obstruction. The panting is probably in response to pain. It really sounds to me like she ate something that she can't pass.

It would be a probably be a good idea to have some x-rays done. Is she still at the vet?

20. Izzy didn't make it.
Sadly, Izzy didn't make it. She died this morning. The vet called this morning around 8:20 and said Izzy was doing fine on all organ fronts and system fronts and that the only explanation left was that it was brain swelling from possibly a ruptured blood vessel in the brain. He asked my permission to give her a drug that would relieve the swelling. I gave the go ahead and five minutes later he called back and said that she was gone. He said it was probably a blood vessel in her brain that was slightly torn and then got progressively worse until it burst.

RIP Izzinator, you were one awesome cat. We are a better family because of you.
