Maybe the stupidest "marketing idea" EVER.
Get this: A limited edition flavor of a "coffee creamer."

Yes, that's right. Someone got paid to come up with the following idea:

1) Develop a new flavor of "coffee creamer."

2) Spend thousands advertising it, so get people to try it.

3) Hope they like it when they try it, because then they'll want to buy more, so you can make back the money you spent on the advertising, and then some profit.

4) Then stop making the stuff because it's a limited edition, thereby guaranteeing you won't make any money!

There may be some kind of twisted logic behind this, but I'll never know, because the website address in the ad (passporttoflavor.com) insists that you accept cookies from them, before they'll even let you see their website.

And again, someone got paid to come up with this idea. Just when I thought I'd seen the dumbest marketing...

2. I've been in the marketing biz for over 25 years, and there's always something new. Hey, what's
your problem with SPOONS? Or are you actually one of those dirty ANTI-FORKISTS? You got a problem with PRONGS? Or is it BOWLS that you discriminate against????

4. I just think that marriage should only exist between forks and spoons.
Same-silverware marriage is an affront to the institue of marriage itself.

13. If I'd put more thought into this analogy I'd totally continue on and pretend to be a
same-silverware relations phobe... :P But I got nothin' else.

A while back I made that bumper sticker and this one...

and put 'em up on cafepress.

I keep meaning to find some place I can advertise 'em and maybe actually sell a few. :)

16. That is wrong on just about every level possible.
It was either designed by someone entirely innocent who had no thoughts as to what it could do... or it was designed by a complete pervert. There is no middle ground there. :P

7. It's that old "limited edition" schtick.
Edited on Fri Jan-11-08 10:01 PM by Kutjara
Marketers think that people are so stupid that they'll panic-buy anything that has "limited edition" on it, even if the edition is only limited by how many can be sold. Unfortunately, the marketers' low opinion of public intelligence is usually right.

The only thing more cretinous is calling something a "collector's edition" or, worse, a "limited collector's edition." They may as well just be honest and put "Fucking Moron's Edition" on the box.

9. "Instead of our usual crap, here's a good product... for a limited time"
Kind of drives me nuts sometimes...

COULD be that you're in a test market city... new products are introduced and promoted in a limited area to see if the public responds before they launch it everywhere. Columbus, Ohio is a big test market city...

17. Oh, Christ, now I'm going to have to go spend 4 hours at that retro junk website.
Especially because I'm old, and will remember all the old crap.

Thanks for the link!
