Completely lost his ONE car key. And needs $200-500 to replace it. AARRGGHH! What do I look like--an ATM?!!!

Critters
wishing this were a parishioner I could use discretionary funds for...but alas

1. Can he hotwire it?
Seriously...

The dealer will make a replacement key if I bring my title in with me. And it's not $200-500.

:(

5. He says he's talked to two locksimths, and is waiting to hear
from the dealer. I told him I'm skeptical. I had a problem with my ignition last year, and they installed a whole new key hole assembly thingie. Can't recall what it cost exactly, but I could hunt up the receipt. But I remember it wasn't as much as I feared it might be--so no $200-$500 bucks.

I also told him to keep looking for the key! And however this gets solved, to get a second key made!!

2. $200 - $500 for a CAR KEY????
Me thinks you are getting your leg pulled, critters.

Granted, if he has only one key, and that key is now lost, the process isn't as simple as getting a copy at the local hardware store.

But up to $500 to replace it? I don't think so.

3. If it's got an electronic security chip in it, those can be pricey to replace.

9. OTOH, if it's just a normal key, that price seems WAY high.
I know that some German and possibly the high-end Japanese makes have expensive keys to remake.

7. That's what I'm thinking.
What annoys me is the crisis after crisis scenario. Some day, he's gonna have a real crisis but will have tapped out all of his friends and family.

12. You don't "look" like an ATM but maybe you act like one?
Is this the same guy who needed a starter replaced last week for 500 bucks? Now it 500 bucks for a lost key? Next week it will be 500 bucks for some other reason. He is using you. I hate to be blunt about it but it sounds as if he is either feeding a drug habit or making a living by scamming people.

What is your connection to him? If he is family I would do an intervention. If he is a romantic interest I would RUN AWAY.

14. Yeah, an intervention may be needed.
Something certainly needs to change.

18. I told him to keep looking.
But I'll feel guilty about if he calls again.

I'm going to stand firm on this. I hope.

22. I recently volunteered to give a client a ride to the store.
Edited on Sat Jan-12-08 10:43 PM by Prisoner_Number_Six
The problem was, she was a half hour drive from me, and I had other things to do. But I made time for her and did it.

Three days later she called again, needing another ride. I gave in. A couple days later, again-- this time I declined, telling her (truthfully) I was otherwise engaged and couldn't do it. For each day over the next week she called. I stopped picking up her calls.

She stopped calling a week ago.

I have a feeling she goes through friendship and good will REALLY fast.

I don't feel even a LITTLE bit guilty about not giving in. You shouldn't either.

19. This sounds like my aunt
Eventually she'd scammed just about everybody and promises he'd made couldn't be delayed anymore and it was clear that she'd wore out her welcome. The next thing we knew, she'd took off with some money she sweet-talked an elderly neighbor into lending her, some she'd borrowed from me, some she was supposed to use for repairs to my Dad's house, and my Dad's van. Only after she took off did everybody find out how much she'd ripped everybody else off for- communication could have stopped it a lot earlier. I got my money back, because she'd left some boxes with me for storage and I craigslisted the stuff that was worth money (and kept the family collectibles she'd abandoned) but the rest of them got screwed- hell, my Dad got a bill for storage from the police dept that finally found his van many months and thousands of miles later.

So my advice, based on an ugly personal experience, is to disentangle yourself from this person as much as you can. It sounds like he thinks you're a soft touch and he's going to keep using you until it doesn't work anymore.

I am a soft touch. It's time for that to change.

21. Who is this guy? A relation? Or some random dude who keeps wandering into your church
asking for handouts?

Tell you can't pay for the new key for a week. He'll "miraculously" find it in the afternoon.

23. A person I know has the perfect answer for those
(friends and family)that ask them to borrow money repeatedly. They informed them that they never lend money to anyone until the first loan is paid back in full no matter what the emergency.

24. Well, after I told him to keep looking for the key, he found it.
How about that! Saying "no" worked--for me if not for him.

Thanks for your advice, DU!
