Anyone know anything about stereo speaker crossover systems?
I have a client who wants to generate a VLF sine wave and have it outputted to a stereo speaker system- specifically the subwoofer. I know the speaker itself wouldn't have a problem with the signal, but the crossovers are usually pretty frequency-specific, and I need something that would successfully pass the signal on to the speaker.

It's in the way of a scientific experiment, and I've been helping out a bit as I can, but crossovers ain't my strong suit.

Help???

3. What's the frequency he's trying to pass
and why is he trying to do this? Is he building an active sonar or something?

Unless there's a specific reason he wants to use a general-purpose loudspeaker, his best bet would be to go to a car stereo shop, buy a subwoofer cabinet and however many woofers he needs to fill it, wire the woofers to an amp with no intervening crossover network, and use that.

4. If the system is properly designed, the crossover will pass the sig
to whatever component can handle it. If you don't have the hardware, the filter won't matter.

I'd keep in mind that LF contains a lot more punch for the same volume. It's easy to blow speakers w/o seeing it coming.

5. 24dB/octave crossovers for subwoofers.

And there is some research indicating that bass is not omnidirectional, leading to a new 5.2 surround specification (Wendy Carlos is a leader in this, IIRC).

Edit: BTW, there is a paper on room modes showing that there are several at the VLF where subs love to lurk, so look into that as well as bass traps...

6. In college, I put Bazooka tubes under my couch
and I used passive crossovers cutting off everything above 50Hz. It was awesome, though I lost some power to the speakers by using a passive variety.

There ends my entire knowledge of crossovers. Sorry.
