Jessica "Don't call me Latina" Alba
These are some of her quotes published by Perez Hilton today:

I always felt like such an outcast and now I feel like people are more diverse ethnically. I was always self conscience of my puffy lips and darker skin when I was a kid, because I felt like I didn't fit in. And now its mainstream, and color isn't as big of a deal and if anything its better."

1. Oh, that's not even the best one.
I read this last night and just sat there shaking my head. Ah, the arrogance (and stupidity) of youth. I hope she comes to regret some of her comments.

"I've got cousins galore. Mexicans just spread all their seeds. And the women just pop them out."

"My grandfather was the only Mexican at his college, the only Hispanic person at work and the only one at the all-white country club. He tried to forget his Mexican roots, because he never wanted his kids to be made to feel different in America. He and my grandmother didn't speak Spanish to their children. Now, as a third-generation American, I feel as if I have finally cut loose."

2. Even if she didn't want to be called Latina, she could be more sensitive about it n/t
I agree with you that she's a bitch.

3. I can see where she's coming from
As a person of minority status myself, I can understand her frustration in being expected to embody a certain ethnic identity just because of the way she looks. If she wasn't accepted fully by the Latino community while growing up, and she doesn't speak Spanish, what exactly makes her a Latina besides her looks? I think she feels resentful that now that she's famous, she's supposed to assume this ethnic role model identity because people are too shallow to look beyond ethnic features when it comes to minorities. Being a Latina means more than just looking Latina, but unfortunately to a lot of people, simply looking like a certain ethnicity means that you have to be a certain way.

4. She makes valid points - if she doesn't self-identify as a particular
ethnicity, it's not really anyone else's business to determine that identity for her. (However, I think calling her "latina" is a lot more accurate than calling her an "actress.")

5. She could perhaps do so, however, without making nasty comments about her Mexican cousins. n/t

7. Very true - we don't know the context, but some of her comments certainly
sound unpleasant...

6. Being an individual is always wrong. Group association is mandatory. Seig heil?
