wisdom tooth extraction advice, please
Is it ok to have general anaesthesia for the removal of all 4 wisdom teeth? I'm afraid of being put totally out.
Thank you
Are there any complications I should know about?

1. These days, people often have general anesthesia for those.
But this thread is asking for medical advice, and most likely will be locked.

The best thing to do is talk to whoever is doing your dental surgery.

Or get a second opinion from another dentist ...

Good luck!

2. A good fentanyl IV with versid
and you won't feel or remember a thing, conscious sedation

safer than general

3. I did.
Then the taxi took me to the pharmacy to get my percodan perscription filled. They would not give me the drug because I was so obviously stoned. The taxi driver came in a bellowed that I just had all four wisdom teeth removed. They handed me the pills pronto.

I had no problems.

Two days later our Daughter was born and I had to rush home for more painkillers.

No complications except you have to rinse the wounds to keep them clean.

4. I had mine out in 2000.
I had MULTIPLE teeth pulled when I was a child. Let me just say, technology has come a loooooooooooooooong way.

I went in, they stuck an IV in my arm, and we were talking. Next thing I know, someone's patting my face and calling my name. I think they're getting ready to begin, and attempt to ask them if they're going to start pulling my teeth ... except I can't talk. I reach up to touch my face and realize ... It's already been done!

Way, WAY easier than what I remember from my childhood days. The first day was hell, the second was hell slightly reduced, and each day after saw remarkable improvement from the last.

5. Some people react to the drug for days afterwards. I just reacted when
I woke up and felt sick. I also was really disoriented because it all felt like two seconds had passed and I couldn't believe they had done the operation.

6. In the "olden days" (1959-60), they extracted two opposing teeth one side at a time.

Also, mine were completely impacted (no part of the teeth were showing through the gums) and that was a little bit more to do.

As I recall, they used sodium brevital (sp) and I didn't have much memory of the surgeries. Woke up and kissed the oral surgeon.

Today, the drugs they use make general anesthesia very easy and completely forgettable.

Good luck, sweetie!

P.S. Going to the dentist is always anxiety-producing, but there are no good alternatives. I'm going tomorrow and I have to take medication to even get in his chair.

7. Do it...
I had all four out at the age of 30. I was high as a kite for hours after...then started with the pills. It was a bitch, but no more infections way back in those bastards.

8. I had sedation for the last two.
The first two I'd had extracted in my regular dentist's office, with local anesthesia and no complications.

The last two were a more complicated matter, and I was sedated. I don't remember anything that happened between getting the IV attached and being escorted into the recovery room. The healing process afterward was easy too, though I hated that nasty dental rinse I had to use.

Whatever method you and your doctor decide upon, make sure to have someone trustworthy to escort you home after the procedure.
