The Blasters! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rZigmqBP0D0

Fomr the same clubs that other superb, under-rated LA bands like Los Lobos and X are from.

Not because of the band, or Johnette, but because of the venue (Key Arena in Seattle) and where we were seated. We could barely make out the lyrics and it pissed me off.

74. String Cheese are my very favorite band....
But not really underrated seeing how they played arenas and the like....I saw SCI 80+ times and every show was incredible. They did somethin much deeper than just seeing a concert. It was really spiritual. Luckily I saw them on the West Coast so i saw all the Hornings Hideout shows and all the NYE shows too....

But the best was in 98 when Leftover Salmon and String Cheese Incident toured together. One band led into the other band...4 hours of pure incredibleness.....

80. YES!
I kept thinking that part of the name started with "T". That would have been the "2000" part.

I'm thinking that Steel Breeze, Sacratomatoes own one-hit-wonder band from that time, opened for them. The drummer from Steel Breeze ended up as a chef at my companies internal cafeteria for a couple years. He had some great stories about when he used to put lighter fluid on his drums and light them while playing. Sounds like he caught quite a few things on fire!

Thanks!!!

Haven't played disc golf in quite a while! You're talking about the big course in the park at Hazel and Oak, yes? That's a great course, as long as it's not the time of year that the worms drop out of the oak trees.

The drummers name was Charlie McSomething. I think he's still playing out as well. Didn't their keyboard player use one of those silly guitar/keyboard thingies that looked like a toy?

These guys were massively influential on a lot of 80s-90s bands, but never got a fraction of the acclaim their contemporaries got. Even U2 has cited them as an influence (after opening for the Comsats on an early tour).

They're probably best known in the US for a song of theirs called "I'm Falling", which appeared for a couple minutes in the film "Real Genius".

Rory Gallagher was an outstanding guitarist during the 60s and barely known in this country. I also liked The Nice, with Keith Emerson, before he founded Emerson, Lake, and Palmer. I also like the Soft Machine, another great but largely forgotten 1960s band from England.

96. Glam/metal is as underrated now as it was overrated during
it's day. Just my opinion. People scoff at bands just because of genre stereotypes. I find kick ass RnR in most every sub-genre. IMO glam/metal is cool now (no it wasn't back then) because people think it is so uncool. I like the Def Leppard from the NWOBHM days. (early 80s)

103. NWOBHM?
WTF?

I liked Def Leppard--up through Pyromania, anyway. Then they went pop and lost me. But during their heyday, they were highly OVERrated, as you say.

I'm a stuck-in-the-80s metal guy. Def Leppard just wasn't the cream of that crop, IMO.

115. New Wave of British Heavy Metal!
I hadn't heard that term before.

So, first of all, who were members of the Old Wave, or the First Wave?

Deep Purple?
Black Sabbath?
Led Zeppelin? (only occasionally metallic)
who else...?

Then, the NWOBHM would include:

Def Leppard
Whitesnake?
Saxon?
Fastway?
Judas Priest? (or were they part of the Old Wave?)
who else...?

116. Wow that is a great list of old wave/new wave!
A few of more NWOBHM: Iron Maiden, Diamond Head and Girlschool.

I am not at all an expert on NWOBHM so your guess is as good as mine as far as where Priest or a band like Motorhead would fit in. I really like every band on that list, even early Whitesnake!

122. I was wondering about Motorhead as well. I don't know them as well.
Girlschool was one of the WORST bands I ever saw live. They were the middle act of a 3-band set. Quiet Riot came out after them and continued to stink up the joint.

Saga was first, and they were the best band of the whole evening.

Rainbow would probably have to be old wave as well, along with Uriah Heep.

Who knows where Motorhead fits in? The best bands don't fit neatly into any genre and IMO, Motorhead is one of 'em. Call it punk, metal, 1st wave, NWOBHM- they KICK ASS!

One of the first shows I ever saw was Quiet Riot when I was 12. I soon learned that there were better bands lol!

recognize their talent!

HR played straight up RnR with conviction, purpose and heart. Singer Mike Monroe is so fucking talented, he can play anything and is the greatest frontman ever IMO. HR started as a punk band and some of their best friends were punk rock legends like Stiv Bators, Joey Ramone and Johnny Thunders. They were completely unpretentious- just a good time RnR band with one kick-ass song after another. I luv 'em and wanna keep 'em to myself.

I sleep in a pyramid
And I visit a shrink
A bum in a cave
Said he thought I could think
I eat what I am
And I'm not overdressed
I can't understand
Why I'm sometimes depressed
Chorus:
Lighten up McGraw
You're efforts of lead
All those words in your head
Lighten up McGraw
You're a helium brain
Jog a mile in the rain
Best of luck
Come again

My lady does yoga
My lady does me
And I do my lady
Whenever I'm free
I covered my bases
I checked everything once
I haven't giggled
In thirty-five months

...My friend had it on white back in the day (1979, '80?) and I always envied that, as mine was the traditional black. Anyway, a million years later, I've now managed to purchase TWO white-vinyl copies on EBay, and still listen to my original vinyl BeBop. Great band, and Bill Nelson is, as you say, amazing. 149. They succeeded in pulling off their own "Johnny B. Goode"...
...also known as "American Music"...a lot of songwriters have tried in vain to carve out their own Chuck Classic, but the Blasters nailed it.

Also, "Dark Night" at the beginning of "From Dusk Till Dawn" is pretty damned amazing..."Hot air hangs like a dead man" as Clooney and Tarantino peel out into the open mouth of Hell.

I'm gonna assume that if you like The Blasters, you also own THIS:

Dave reclaims his own "Long White Cadillac" (probably the greatest twang-stomper in Dwight Yoakam's entire catalog) and also performs The Blasters' "Look Out (It Must Be Love)," along with a medley of Woody Guthrie's "Do Re Mi" and Chuck Berry's "Promised Land." It was recorded live in Austin. It still holds up like one rocking mother, 11 years after its release date.
