12. How come most vegan food pretends to be meat or dairy?
i can't even count how many vegan products were faux jerky, faux meat and whatnot.

isn't that kind of weird?

22. I think it's because people grow up non-vegan
so it seems more familiar - don't have to think as much about it. Also, veggie burger sounds more appetizing than soy product patty. :p

Every so often I try fake hot dogs (wanting something quick to grab with some protein in it) and think, damn, these taste just as weird as meat hot dogs. Then I forget a few months later. Different brands are way different though, IMHO. Some are nasty, some are so-so.

There is some amazing fake pepperoni out there - it even crisps like pepperoni in the oven. The wonders of food science!

For me not eating meat was easy. I haven't been able to be vegan because I can't give up cheese and ice cream (and eggs, mostly in other dishes). Being a vegan is a major commitment. Dennis K. is a vegan, right?

Let's not talk about vegan cheese though.

43. I should try some new ones. It's been a while.
The soy ones I tried years ago were not good. Don't know if I tried any rice ones. I don't buy ice cream much for home but there is a very good local ice cream producer who sells across the street from work so temptation is way too close.

44. Yeah, the old ones were ghastly.
I'm kinda lucky, they really started making a lot of good analogues right around the time I went vegan, so I really never had to deal too much with the chalky soymilk or anything like that.

46. I'm happy with Soymilk
Silk anyway (I tried a different one on sale - 8th continent or something? - and it gave me a tummyache.)

Maybe the Wonders of Food Science have made the soycream and soycheese better.

Edited on Fri Jan-18-08 05:24 PM by hippywife
because they contain egg whites, the Morning Star Farms Corn Dogs are really good. Can't tell the difference at all. The Chik'n Nuggets are really good, too. As far as burgers go, the Amy's California Burger is excellent and it isn't soy. It's mostly mushrooms with other veggies.

Edited to add that the Quorn Chicken Patties and Naked Cutlets are awesome, too!

and miss some of that stuff.

No vegan who was once an omni will EVER tell you that bacon doesn't taste good. It just does. If they say differently, they're liars.

51. I'm a liar I think
I've been a laco/ovo vegetarian since 1974 I can't remember the taste of bacon. I do know the sight and smell makes me feel very sick. Putting bacon in my mouth is right on par with eating a cat turd as far as I'm concerned.
I've been eating pure vegan for about 3 months, I'm feeling so healthy. I think I shall continue.
