I hate Q
If Q didn't show up in Trek Next Generation, the Borg would have happily assimilated them all.

"I need immodium A D"

"Now that I've assimilated Sanjaya..."

"My big red laser doubles as the ultimate optical mouse"

1. Would they have even met the borg had it not been for Q's meddling?
Edited on Sun Jan-20-08 08:32 PM by DarkTirade
Or am I misremembering how it all started? It's been a while since I saw those episodes.

3. Probably, yes - it only would have taken the Borg longer.
The first episode, "Q Who" introduces the Borg, but even Guinan and Picard lament that Q may have done them a favor in spite of also possibly moving forward a series of events...

5. Well yeah, they would have gotten there eventually
but I didn't remember how close the Borg were to finding Federation space. I seemed to recall Q making them fly off at warp 9.99999997 to a really distant part of the galaxy or something. But I may just be insane and remembering things that didn't actually happen.

Well... didn't happen in that particular fictional universe, at least. :)

That Borg Cube they first met was just beginning to attack the Federation's outlying colonies. With Earth being the capital planet, once they realized that, they would have headed straight there to assimilate it first, and then move to the rest of the Federation and surrounding empires(Romulan, Klingon, Ferengi, etc.).

9. No, that was the second encounter with the Borg
In the first, Q brought them to a very distant part of the Galaxy, then brought them back when Picard swalled his pride and begged Q for help.

I believe the Borg headed off in the last known direction the Enterprise was seen going, and by maintaining a high warp factor was able to make it to the Federation within a couple of years.

That was the two-part episode "The Best of Both Worlds", when the Borg began sucking up Federation outposts with a huge tractor beam.

10. Actually, "The Neutral Zone" has the Enterprise scouting the Romulan border...
and Picard is reluctant to set a pact with the Romulans as both sides have had their outposts gutted - explained in the way that would, some 2 years later, be confirmed to have been done by the Borg.

14. Yeah, but then why the lag time?
The Borg would have assimilated all the survivors of the outposts and colonies and known the layout of the Federation, its level of technology, and all sorts of other intelligence goodies. Remember, they only sent a single cube to conquer the Federation in "The Best of Both Worlds". No reason for a cube that was sucking up outposts to not move in on its own to Earth.

Have we (you, Orrex, and myself) hit upon some kind of discontinuity in the Star Trek timeline?

11. I thought that the Borg were implied in Season One
In one of the season's final episodes The Neutral Zone. Heck, maybe it was the finale, for all I can remember.

Anyway, a goodly number of Federation and Romulan outposts were scooped up entirely, leaving vast craters and lots of finger-pointing. Romulans suspected the Federation, and vice versa. I don't recall that they ever set the record straight, which is weird, but the method of destruction seemed quite similar to that shown in The Best of Both Worlds.

Incidentally, the events of ST:VOY clearly indicate that Borg:Federation contact occurred long before Q Who?.

6. There are several types of powder...
Talcum powder, gun powder, powdered sugar... powdered sugar can be fun.

Why would you want to put any form of chemical on your nose? Would that not inhibit your ability to breathe?

He makes a kick ass watch for James to use on missions.

Oh wait, you aren't talking about Q from the James Bond movies/novels.

19. The ONLY source of humor? I think not...
You've got Worf and Wesley Crusher. They were the source of (some) humor.
And, oddly enough, Jar jar Binks was their love child.

18. I never cared for him.
But I was never a huge TNG fan either.

Kinda funny though, my BiL had this kid he was mentoring who wrote a short story. He asked me to read it and help him to write an ending. When I did, I wrote Q into the story.
