I'm stressed. My mom came thisclose to dying Saturday night
This is the 3rd time now in the last year that she's gone into diabetic/hypoglycemic shock. She took too much insulin and by the time the EMT arrived her core body temperature had already fallen to below 90 degrees (it was -0 outside and the house was pretty cold). She's not anywhere near where we could have her declared incompetent but she's not doing a very good job taking care of herself. I sort of wish I had had the presence of mind to use my phone to video her while she was in the middle of this attack because maybe seeing herself semi-conscious lying in a heap on the ground, making incoherent moaning noises and biting us when we tried to put glucose tablets in her mouth -- maybe if she saw that she'd get a clue of how fucking serious this is. The doctor said that had we not found her when we did she'd have died of hypothermia by morning. All this and still she won't fill the prescription for a syringe filled with glucose for us to give her if this happens again. She's got to be a cat, she's escaped death so many times with this and with her heart...but even a cat only has 9 lives. I don't know what the hell to do and I can't handle all this stress.

2. Maybe her doctor can refer her to a diabetics class.
Sometimes the instructions given to diabetics by their docs are kinda spotty...a class might give her a better handle on things.

3. She's been to them but I think I'm going to see about having her do it again and go along myself
If I have a better idea about glycemic index foods and stuff maybe I can cook for her so that she's got more good carbs in her diet. Thanks for the hugs. It's just so...grrr!

5. One of those Food Saver machines helped a lot when I was cooking
for my dad. I used one to "feed" the freezer with single portions. It gave him more variety and control over his diet. I understand your frustration...Dad never reconciled himself to the injections. :(

4. Sending prayers for your
Mom and also for you. Maybe she's ready for an insulin pump.

6. Wow. I'm very, very sorry that you're dealing with that.
I hope your mom starts to take this more seriously, and starts to listen.

7. Can you get a nurse to come see her a few times a week, to make
sure she is fixed with her medications and such? And ask her doctor to yell at her to get the glucose syringe filled. Or you can get the script from her doctor and fill it yourself.

This was a problem with my grandmother and it was maddening to everyone around.

8. Oh, Connonym, I'm so sorry
I'm diabetic myself, and it seems to me that what your mother is doing is very selfish, if she is purposefully not taking good care of herself. Accidents or misjudgments in dosing happen to all of us who are dealing with diabetes, but if it keeps happening, it seems like she needs some serious words from her doctor or diabetes educator about gauging how much insulin she should be taking.

I'm sorry you're dealing with this, and wish I had some wise words for you. She won't even get a prescription for glucagon? WTH?

9. If I were you, I would get the paper prescription from her and fill it yourself.
