A virus checker question regarding AVG...
I just installed AVG. Paul uses it and suggested I do the same. I ran the program after I installed and rebooted and it came up with what it says are 6 viruses located in .BAT files. My question is: Why didn't my other virus scanner come up with them? The test isn't done so I can't go in and see if I scan the file directly whether it will find the virus but I'm curious.

1. some virii target the virus definition files of the better known
anti-virus programs I think.
Do you keep your anti-virus programs running when you are on the computer?

2. My Norton was always running...
It caught a few viruses in my mail but AVG has found 6 of them in .BAT file (it says). Norton was to scan ALL files on my computer and did a complete scan every Friday but never came up with them.

4. I do know
that AVG checks for some viruses Norton does not. I don't know if that's what you are seeing but it could be. Would you post the filenames when you get a chance? I'd like to see those.

An anecdote: Remember when Mydoom.A hit the web? I was aware of it about 3 days before any news of it came in my email or was seen on CNN etc. I visit some techie sites what can I say. Anyway when I heard of this new nasty I visited AVG and they had a patch for it already. My daughter, who has Norton, wasn't able to get an update from them addressing Mydoom.A until 36 hours later.

I'll take AVG.

5. I found out what the 'viruses' were...
We are downloading some files for a friend who doesn't have high-speed and the files are parts until put back together.

This program said that the parts with the .BAT file (which is run to put them back together) was a virus because it's named "File.MPG.BAT" and it did something (it says 'cleaned') to them. I'll have to wait till Paul wakes up to ask about it.

6. What's Important To AVG
Might not be all that important to Norton's.

Use both while you can, compare the results and discuss it with people you "know" are knowledgeable about Computers.
