As a Piaf fan of several decades, I was quite skeptical about this film -- who dares to attempt to portray La Mome? -- and went to see it with a bit of a chip on my shoulder. With the first scene, Mme. Cotillard kicked that chip to the back of the theatre. I've never seen a performance like it on a screen or a stage anywhere... extraordinary. I was riveted and was shaking and exhausted by the time it was done. I always thought the idea of "channeling" was absurd until I saw this film.
Will she get the Oscar? She should, but she won't. I was happy to see her take home a Golden Globe, but let's face it, she wasn't in the proper category for those. I'm pleased that she's nominated, because she and this gorgeous film will get lots of good attention from it.
Here's a cute interview with Cotillard, she is absolutely nothing like her portrayal in the film, night and day, the mark of a truly unique and gifted actress. My God, she is so young!
