Loss of sexual function.

If more people had your side effect they'd market it just for that. :)

"Last week we had a problem with the database server when it ... oooooooooooooooooohhhhhhh" and your eyes go crosseyed and you have to wear three pairs of underwear and/or fill your crotch with kleenex so it doesn't leak into your suit pants, you know why "interesting" is a curse.

3. I'm not currently on medication, but...
Edited on Tue Jan-22-08 08:50 PM by janesez
I was on Lexapro for over a year and it helped me through the most difficult period of my life. I had a huge stigma about antidepressants before that and wasn't even really aware of it, but now I would not hesitate to suggest it to any of my loved ones should they be experiencing the kind of debilitating depression I had. There comes a point where the admission that your pain is not manageable and you need help is the most powerful step you can take. I would take it again in a heartbeat if I felt myself sliding back into that abyss.

7. Lexapro was great for me.
No sexual side effects, which you do have with Prozac, and almost no side effects to speak of. I did gain about 10 pounds in the year I took it, and it was a little gnarly getting off it - but that's because I just stopped taking it suddenly (I actually forgot to take it and then kept forgetting for 3 weeks - couldn't figure out why I was dizzy and nauseous and agitated! I'm not too bright, apparently). If you taper off the way you're supposed to, it's supposedly not too bad.

I was only on 10mg a day so YMMV.

12. OUCH. Not tapering those things is nasty...
I even have a hard time when I do taper them when I do a med change.

You didn't get the sexual side effects w/ Lexapro? I just switched to it a few months ago, but then again I haven't really had the chance to test the sexual side effects part yet... :hide:

Good luck with the meds. They can make the difference between living a life and just existing.

You may qualify for that. If you make too much $$$ for MNCare, you may qualify for Minnesota Comprehensive Health Insurance, which provides insurance for people who have pre-existing conditions that can't buy insurance in the marketplace.

Minnesota is pretty good for covering people with insurance difficulties. We used to be better before Pawlenty, but don't get me started....

They originally prescribed it for sleep for me, too. I still take most of mine at night, along with a decent-sized slug of Ambien. After being an insomniac most of my life (with sleep apnea, no less), it's nice to be able to sleep through World War III.

26. Zoloft made me a little manic
in fact I couldn't shut up and couldn't sit still, and was agitated to some degree, on a very low dose (starter dose of 50 mg)

taking Lexapro, Wellbutrin, and Klonipin now, not sure it is quite the right combo for me yet, but it is better than I was.

Sometimes I think I've just kind of gotten dependent physically on SSRI's because I don't do well off of one, but on the other hand, I didn't do well when I wasn't taking them and didn't know anything different, now I do.

but I think it was worse when I was on Paxil. But when I was taking Paxil I had only been diagnosed with unipolar depression, and not the bipolar bits. Of course, the fact that I ran up $20k in credit card debt in a year while on Paxil MAYBE should've been a clue... D'oh!

I'm not sure about any clinics. I don't even really know which ones do that.

So the doctor there just keeps giving you samples indefinitely? I would be freaked out that it would unexpectedly end at some point and then I'd be screwed. I tend to worry about eventualities and don't much like uncertainty.

48. My experience with SSRI's has been very, very good.
At my age the success rate is lower, and side effects are an issue. But with the nightmare I had in the past year, I had to do something. I had gotten to the point when one evening, I came home and sat on the couch and cried. Saw a psychiatrist a week later, got the Rx. I guess I'm lucky but its been so, so very helpful. Life is still a pain, but I can face, can function, am productive at work and home.

60. a medicine called Serzone
an antidepressant no less

did that to me

or at least I felt that way on it

got really more depressed than I was before I took it

meds affect people differently

one thing about antidepressants is that sometimes they pick up a person's energy and that makes someone who was already suicidal more at risk in some cases.

But if it makes you feel suicidal where you didn't feel that way before, GET OFF it like you did

glad you did

70. I was on Prozac for a short time several years ago. I felt even more
depressed than I had before I started taking it so I quit them. It almost seemed that by recognizing my depression and giving it a name that I had allowed it to have a strong power over me, almost like a separate entity. I know that sounds strange, but it's the only way I can describe it.

I don't always get the desired effect with many prescription drugs, so I have not tried anything as a replacement for Prozac.
