To go along with Parche's thought provoking "life" post.
Edited on Tue Jan-22-08 11:38 PM by philboy
So we have a responsible job at a big company and we have to get an Excel spreadsheet to the boss by tomorrow morning. We forget to do it, the boss rips you a new one, and you feel tremendous guilt and dread about your future and career because that spreadsheet is SO important. It's the QUARTERLY SPREADSHEET!!

And then your boss dies. Or you die. Or your friend dies. Or you get sick and go on permanent disability. And after all those things happen, the company manages to survive and thrive. Also, there is a little boy in some foreign country who is living his life, and has no idea what the QUARTERLY SPREADSHEET is. And his life goes on, and will go on for 80 years or so, without ever hearing of your spreadsheet, or even hearing of your company, or not even knowing the country you live in.

So when you die, you cease to live, and you have no recollection of your spreadsheet. In fact, no one remembers the spreadsheet. That spreadsheet that made you worry about your loss of income and medical insurance.

In fact, when you are dead, you have no recollection of anything. It's like you were not even there, EVER.

So to us, life is meaningless.

But...

There are people who love us, who still carry us in their hearts. These people will pass on memories of you to others, who in turn will do the same thing.

And we live on that way. And it is mainly due to love. Do we live forever this way? No. But probably nothing exists forever. However. LOVE makes us live longer than our physical bodies.

And the funny thing is.... we are not loved and remembered for our spreadsheets.

5. LOL!
Well, replace spreadsheet with cover letter, resume, written report....you know... all those things we think are so important but really are not.

9. That, I think is what drives me to create.
Even if only a few people remember me and the things I've made, that means I've left something behind. :)

10. And some of us leave a lot behind...
while some of us leave a little behind. But no matter what the content or amount, it makes our entire life worthwhile.

7. Thanks Parche...
I'm really glad you posted what you did, very thought provoking.

Whenever I start thinking I am insignificant, I think of other lives I have touched.

And anyone who thinks they have never touched anyone's heart or improved their life in some fashion is wrong. And the good part is, even if you have only done it once, it is remembered. :hi:

6. Work the Brazillion joke into your spreadsheet.
People will remember that.

8. OK, like this?
In cell B4, type "If A27>40, Olive Garden, Brazillion joke"

That means if the value in cell a27 is greater than 40, then insert "Olive Garden" in cell B4. If not, then insert the Brazillion joke.
