A likely gathering of celebrities and Hollywood bigwigs isn't one where I would be betting on someone among the guests going postal on the Branch FredPhelpsians, but I could imagine an ordinary grieving fan watching the events from across the street pulling a Jack Ruby imitation on Fred the Sadist.

I agree with the comments about ignoring him. This personfication of hate thrives on publicity. I wish the media would ignore this, but they won't.

The pain of our existence keeps doing thing that affect people. Like when he is doing one of his protest, people want to know why this or that street is blocked off. He single handily cause a lot of legislation to be passed to try and protect others from his version of "Free Speech".

since hollywooders knew this person, and since many of them have more than a little bit of money, maybe someone could put together a big canvas or three... or four...and some teamsters from Hwood could carry those canvases and put them between Phelps and the rest of the funeral cortege. if he moves, they move. Or they could surround him so his gang of putrid hatemongers cannot go anywhere while people are going into a funeral service.

Phelps should be ignored, but his acts are so public that ignoring them would hurt everyone that has to look at that garbage. They harass funerals and target people who are their most vulnerable. I know that there are groups that shield families from having to look at Phelps, which is what should happen everywhere. He can protest all he damned wants, but little children with signs about your dead loved ones going to hell is not something anyone should have to see.

I hope Phelps and his minions are segregated from everyone for all of eternity, as any afterlife with Phelps in it would be hell.

I don't find it surprising in the least, nor am I going to get too excited about it, I figured he'd do it as soon as I heard Ledger had died.

I think Phelps serves a purpose in a way he doesn't intend. He takes the bigotry people try to disguise within themselves and puts it on unbridled display for everyone to see. They see what they carry around in their darkest selves brought out into the full light of day.

I personally think he does more to make more people sympathetic to the rights of GLBT's, when they would not have otherwise been. That kind of stark raving hate has a way of stopping everyday people in their tracks and getting them to re-examine what they believe.
