My wife thinks I made her look like an idiot
Apparently some months ago, we were talking with someone about movies we'd seen in 2007 that we liked. One of the movies she mentioned was "Across the Universe" and I then said that I actually ended up thinking it wasn't that great. Right after the movie, I probably said I enjoyed it, but later, after thinking about the movie, I decided it was heavy handed and unsubtle and it just wasn't my kind of film. Since we never ended up talking about the movie again until the above conversation, I never told her that I changed my mind on the movie.

Now, months later, she's bringing this incident up and saying that I made her look like an idiot because she said we both liked the movie and I just happened to have changed my mind about the movie and didn't tell her about it. It's a movie. So what if I changed my mind on it? I don't think that counts as making her look like an idiot.

She says she looks like an idiot if she says something that is incorrect. I think she's really blowing this all out of proportion but can't reason with her on this. What do I do?

1. Let it pass
If you really want you can explain it to her the way you did here. Otherwise just let it go.

I know there have been times when Mr. Debi has said something that I felt made me look bad in front of others and I've had to wait and tell him about it later - usually he didn't realize that he'd hurt my feelings. So I had to just let it go.

2. People can't always help the way they feel...
even if it doesn't make sense. Tell her you're sorry you made her look like an idiot.

3. If she thinks she looks like an idiot because you changed her mind...
maybe she should consider what she looks like for getting into a fight with you about it.

INSECURE!

4. Let it pass.
She voiced an opinion that she thought you were in agreement with, and she FELT ______ when you clarified your opinion as one different from hers.

So, she's laying blame on your behavior for her emotional reaction to something she hadn't anticipated. It's easy to do - blame others for our own feelings. It's the cause of many an argument, and it's emotionally irresponsible.

Let it pass. If you're compelled to, then go ahead and apologize for the misunderstanding, but don't apologize for "embarassing" her, unless there was indeed a publicly embarassing scene.

6. Oh man, I hate this
Tell her she's smart and entitled to her opinion and so are you. This is a ridiculous reason to fight. She's probably feeling insecure about something completely unrelated. Trust me, it's probably NOT about liking the movie. Don't try to reason with her. Sometimes people feel stupid. It happens to everyone.

Also, sometimes it's OK to let your woman be mad at you for a little bit as long as it doesn't get out of hand. Just let it go for now.

Just my $0.02. Consider the source. My girlfriend now is my first long-term relationship so I don't have as much experience.

8. apologize to her
a movie is not something worth getting into a big fight over. Say you were wrong for not telling her and that next time you'll do better.

9. Here is what I would do.:
1)Tell her that you can't help it that stupid shit comes out of her mouth.

2)Then bring up something she said in the past that really angered you and make a big deal out of it.

3)Say something unflattering about her mother.

4)Walk out of the room, slamming the door in her face.

P.S. Remember to sign the divorce papers in blue pen. Black makes you look like the bad guy.

11. She's a woman, and no amount of reasoning will work!
:hide:

They remember things that you have no recollection of. I sometimes think they make up stuff I said, and then use it against me!

:hi:

14. I can't figure out if this is an insecurity issue, a control issue, or both
Was this the sort of thing her parents told her when she was growing up or something?

I don't know what else there is to do other than tell her that you'll have to just agree to disagree about this. If this was a conversation between me and my husband, we would tease the other person about it until it was no longer considered a serious issue but we're weird that way.
