Who is Lee L. Mercer Jr.?

I often ask that question of the man who has seemingly come from nowhere to capture the imagination of the public (All Three). Recently my wife, who is a huge Walter Mosley fan, gave me a book called Futureland that she thought I would like. I just started reading and was enjoying Mosley's vision of America circa 2024, until page 12 when I came across a paragraph that freaked me out:

My jaw hit the floor as I read this. NATIONAL AND INTERNATIONAL?! What the fuck could this mean? Is Lee Mercer just a figment of Walter Mosley's imagination? Is Lee Mercer from the future, giving subliminal signals to Mosley via the electric snake hotwire hookup? My mind is racing! (All Three)
