I'm NOT bullish on Pampas Grass....
It cuts the ever-lovin' be-jeezus out of human flesh!

Helped mom and dad thin some out yesterday afternoon, and probably needed a transfusion afterwards. I took a piece to work this morning, just to see what makes them so vicious. Behold:

Next time, I'll bring 50 gallons of Roundup and drive-by those bastards!

3. Sounds about like Cat Claw or Wait a minute bushes.

The thorns are shaped like a cat's claw and when it grabs you, it is like it is saying "wait a minute" and holds you there. You never want to get the thorn in your skin, and be moving. It makes a nasty gouge in flesh.

4. Those look bad....
but do people plant them on purpose? I see pampas grass everywhere, and it does do a good job of muffling sound, and blocking the sight of things.

5. People do plant them on purpose
and they are an invasive weed.

In summary, people should not plant them. :)

6. Native bamboos
Do an even better job of it, and aren't considered invasive species.

Pampas grass hasn't been a problem yet in Florida (it seems to be one of the few non-natives that isn't invasive here) but it's a horrendous problem in California. A lot of invasive species are extremely attractive looking. That's probably why people made the mistake of planting them in the first place!

7. It grows naturally in West Texas.
People plant them because they do have a very sweet smelling flower. Bees love it, it makes a great honey. But, due to poor range management, it has become a scurge on the Texas prairie and range land.
