Anyone ever create their family tree digitally / online?

My parents made a massive hand written family tree, and I think it might be a good idea to create a digital version. I have never done such a thing, and I am wondering if anyone has any thoughts on it. I see there are website like geni.com that do this, but I won't really know how effective it is until I have entered hundreds of names.

Any suggestions? Websites to use or not use?
