Really great movies without SEX or VIOLENCE!
Right now I am clicking between two of them, Pleasantville and The Jerk. No graphic sex or violence in either. Both excellent movies.

69. One of my favorites, BUT...
...there IS that scene where McIntyre is hearing, through the thin walls of his room at the inn, the innkeeper and his wife clearly engaging in a bit of "afternoon delight" cuddling.

On the other hand, that probably says something about my need to read sex into everything. It's a gentle, whimsical and sophisticated film, and I've watched it at least a dozen times.

Hold ON though! Violence? What about the rabbit who gets hit by the car?

27. There was plenty of sex between Gordon and Stella Urquhart.
But it was all off-screen (and within the bonds of marriage, if that's important to you.) :-)

Love "Local Hero". One of the most thrilling, quiet, wonderful movies ever made.

40. That film rules, but I remember a short sex montage in the beginning.
Mostly from the waist up, but it's couples and you see some boobies.

I saw boobies.

Excellent film. I would also recommend it, for anyone.

Whistler (David Straithern), asking for "Peace on Earth and goodwill to all men"

I'll also add Sense and Sensibility, Chocolat, Seabiscuit, Passion Fish, A Good Year and Big Fish (neither of which were "great" to me, though some might argue about Big Fish; I liked them both a lot because Albert Finney was in them). Lots of excellent movies.

He's politically progressive, and he doesn't just make the same movie over and over again.

104. I love Arsenic and Old Lace, but... (SPOILER ALERT)
Edited on Mon Jan-28-08 03:49 PM by CBHagman
...I think you've omitted certain key plot points, like what those two sweet old aunts were really doing, to say nothing of Jonathan Brewster's (Raymond Massey) criminal career. And there is a donnybrook when the cops show up.

And as for sex, don't forget Cary Grant running away with his bride (Priscilla Lane) flung over his shoulder. "CHARGE!" ;-)

72. Ratatouille, The Straight Story (both G-Rated, the 2nd by DAVID LYNCH)
That's right, David Lynch directed a G-Rated film for Disney, http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0166896/">The Straight Story and it was great — nominated for an Oscar!

Also, no one mentioned "The Iron Giant"

74. The Apartment
Of course, there are lots of great classic films with no s/v, so this may not count.

78. "The Apartment" was about sex...
...though none was shown, of course. Same with "My Three Sons."

85. Quiz Show/A River Runs Through It
Robert Redford makes fine films. However, ARRTI does show kids fighting and Paul does get beaten(off-camera).

Whoops...you said WITHOUT sex or violence. :D

But seriously - Pride and Prejudice (the version with Keira Knightley), Sense and Sensibility, Emma, Anne of Green Gables, What Dreams May Come :-)

On edit: Stardust is a lovely little fantasy story, although there is some violence (e.g., sword-fighting) and off-screen sex.

99. I like the Myrna Loy, Cary Grant & similar movies from the last century...
I wish they'd make them like that again...

I think American Pie is the worst ever movie that has been made...
