is that someone will inevitably say "Well, they were better than Van Hagar", which really sucked.

Let's analyze this. David Lee Roth is a giant douche. Sammy Hagar is a right-wing dickface. The argument is that Hagar as the frontman was just terrible, and Van Halen were 'back' once Roth came back to the band. The problem is, ALL THREE other members of the band went along with Hagar and liked it. Therefore, Van H-whatever, will SUCK, ALWAYS HAVE SUCKED, and WILL SUCK FOREVER!

And really hated the Grateful Dead. I got some passses for them at a show in Reno in 82 or 83 to see the Dead. I saw them at the setbreak and they were totally destroyed by it. Glassy-eyed, dialeted pupiled, noodle daning fools.

I bet none of them ever listened to VH again after that. They were Deadheads. FOR LIFE.

One of the guys Mom, whom he lived with at the time, actually thanked me for turning her kid onto the Dead and giving him tapes of shows. She HATED the music he used to listen to (VH, Scorps, Judas Priest etc) but she really liked it when he would blast the Dead. She said it made her feel good.

Now, let me say that each and every member of Van Halen appears to be seriously flawed in the "human being" department. We know Eddie and Alex are capitalistic Porsche-driving ego-driven control freaks, that Dave is...well, DAVE...and you're right. Sammy can tell you what Dubya had for breakfast. Sammy's the supreme asshole, but that's also a huge part of his shtick...he KNOWS it and LIKES being that way.

I clearly remember when "Eruption/You Really Got Me" spilled out of radio speakers across the U.S. for the first time. It was a breath of fresh air as the death rattle of disco music could also be heard at the same time.

As a guitarist since the age of 14, I can't TELL you how good it felt to hear real, LOUD rock and roll guitar again after that "Boogiee Oogie Woogie till I just can't boogie no more" BULLSHIT.

Dear GOD, did I HATE that SHIT.

Van Halen had it all, they pissed it away...just like Ronnie Montrose, the leader of Hagar's first band. Montrose "could have" been huge. Instead, the usual bullshit got in the way and there is one 5-star Hagar album, a piss-poor follow up, and a handful of other albums in which Montrose displayed flashes of brilliance (notably the first two Gamma albums) but couldn't let go of his dick long enough to enter the race for the long haul.

Huge portions of Van Halen truly suck, but there are things I'll give them credit for. Too bad the fact that they're assholes got in the way of their potential.
