1. How big is the picture, Bertha?
Edited on Wed Jan-30-08 10:37 AM by Tuesday Afternoon
I am thinking of a triple mat....

on edit, I am thinking a light soft grey next to the picture, then the red, then the deep navy blue. I would use a silver frame ....maybe.

6. I'm with you except I'd use a graphite or gunmetal colored frame.

8. Yes, Either of those would work as well, if not better.
Good options.

2. OK
first mat directly on the pic:
white with a red pinstripe 1/8th
of an inch from the edge. 2nd mat
needs to be thicker, beveled 45 degree
cut and grey, situated 1/8th of an
inch from the red striped on the 1st,
1 inch wide total. 3rd mat needs to
be a deep slate blue (the color of his
hat to tie the whole ensemble together),
45 degree beveled edge and no more than
3 inches wide. Top it
off with a nice modernistic chrome or
silver frame.

4. are you a professional framer? an artist?
that sounds wonderful. is it the thin red stripe on a white mat because that's how the name looks on the plane? and I was thinking a dark color on the outside to match his hat. thank you!

17. An artist of sorts..
have had many pieces
framed over the years.
The red is indeed to
draw notice to the name
on the plane, that and
the blue (of his hat),
sandwiching the grey, will
tie it all together nicely
and not draw attention away
from the photo, but into it.
:hi:

5. How about matching your wall?
Edited on Wed Jan-30-08 12:18 PM by Orsino
I framed some pictures recently, and chose frames to match the pictures' dominant colors, outer mats to match the walls, and inner mats to bring out secondary colors within the pictures.

7. I like a thin gold border with a black mat,
(gold to match his hat),

or a thin red one with a outer mat the same color of blue that is behind his head under the letters "EX" - there are two little small blots of blue there, that are perfect.

I was playing around with colors, and those are the two combos I really like.

just for another option could you show it triple matted with a light grey on the inside border, then a softer red and lastly a slate blue.

13. Alas, I cannot do so right now... work just kicked in.
But I had tried some shades of blue and gray against the photo, and none of them looked good - at least, not on the computer. They blended right into too many parts of the photo, and instead of looking like a mat, they looked like part of the photograph.

If it's any help, I did my matting exploration stuff in powerpoint - nice and simple and easy. You might be able to do the same.

But - frak! - work calls like an especially angry harpy!

16. I understand about the work
and you are right about the blending...to my way of thinking it expands the picture rather than blocking it in. See you...The angry harpy screeches at me as well ;)

PS...I don't think I have power point

11. Try this
Go to AmericanFrame.com and you can try a bunch out with their program. they are also a good place to purchese frames, mattes cheaply.

12. What do you want to emphasize in the picture?

To me, the red is a nice plucky color, but the photo isn't about the word on the plane. It's about the guy in the plane. Personally I would use an eighth inch golden yellow inner mat to match the patch on his hat, with a navy-beveled-to-white outer mat. I think that will do a better job of placing the attention on him, where it belongs. Beyond that, the photo is pretty light so I would go with a dark frame do as not to compete with the image, in whatever material (wood or metal) integrates best with the area where it will hang.

FWIW.

18. From outside to in
Metal frame if you can match the colour of the lightest part of the wing strut on the right of the picture.
It appears more pewter than silver to my eye.

Navy outer mat with red inner if it's going to hang someplace with lots of light. There's enough shadow in
the picture that the dark colours could make it wash out in subdued light. I can't really say without having the
picture and mat samples in front of me. You could use a blue taken from the reflections & shadows on the plane
instead of a navy. You could also take the colour from the lighter plaid stripes in the shirt. If you choose
the darker combination, keep the mat narrower - 3" at the most. If the photo is 8 x 10 then I would say no more
than 2" (1.75 " for outer and .75" for the inner mat).

I'd also consider an over-sized white outer mat with 1/4" blue inner mat and 1/8" red inner mat. The whole idea
is to draw the eye into the picture. It doesn't have to be art gallery white - a blued or greyed white would work.
I wouldn't make navy the colour closest to the photo since it would blend into the lower part of the photo. Again,
you could use one of the other blue colours in the photo instead of navy. Whichever you choose, I would definitely
keep red as the colour closest to the picture.

If you go for a wood frame, I'd suggest a simple birdseye or curly maple 1" - 1.5" frame. Oak or a golden pine is
another option. I'm thinking of picking up the colour from the patch on the hat. I'm not suggesting an outright
yellow or gold... just something that has a hint of that colour.

Don't use non-glare glass if it's going to hang near a light source. The light will wash out the picture.
