Edited on Wed Jan-30-08 07:05 PM by lizerdbits
"Barely into the dixie category"

I guess the midwestern responses are from a Montana mom, dixie from growing up in VA (although northern VA) but my dad is from FL.

4. You want a WTF? I'm 67% Dixie!
I thought that Ohio influence might lessen that..but no. Well, we are south of the Mason-Dixon line, but I would never have thought Maryland as being so dixified!!

43% (Yankee). Barely into the Yankee category.

I grew up in NY. Went to college in NY. Moved to California.

The only place in the south I've ever even VISITED is New Orleans. For 4 days.

16. 74% Dixie. I guess the other 26% is the requisite conservatism, cuz I ain't got NONE!
I'm from Texas originally, as is my sister, my mother is from Alabama, and my dad is from Oklahoma, so it was sort of unavoidable. Nearly thirty years of living in the Pacific Northwest hasn't ground it out of me yet.

Odd, 'cuz everyone here swears I'm pure Californian, even after 30+ years of living in the South. "Oh, you're originally from Berkeley? Well, that explains it!"

Actually had a Zen moment the other day. I went to the library to change my address on my voter's registration. The guy filled out the forms, and then handed them to me to sign, advising me to check and make sure the new information was correct. I looked them over, and just before signing, noted "That all looks okay. By the way, how did you know I was a Democrat?" He remarked "It was on your previous registration". Then he looked at me, and burst into a fit of laughter. It was at that point that I realized I was wearing lavender cotton yoga pants with an "Om" embroidered on them, a lavender and green patchwork jacket, and a pair of green Birkenstocks. Furthermore I was carrying a canvas grocery bag with "Support your local organic farmer" and a copy of The Assault on Reason.

Hmm. I wonder what gave away that I wasn't a Republican....?

40. 55% Dixie -- guess living with a southerner in the South
has influenced me to some extent. I grew up in SoCal; much of my answers, according to the quiz, were typical of "western Great Lakes area" - so I guess my language usage was formed by my mom, who grew up in the western Great Lakes area --- makes sense. But I have picked up a few Dixie-isms in the last 10 years.

Well, I grew up in Mass. My ancestors came over on the Mayflower. The letter "R" does not exist in my family. My Dad used to call soda "tonic." I say "wicked good." Yet somehow my talking isn't Yankee enough.

45. Yeah, I fell below the Mason-Dixon line myself!!!
WTF: Okay, so I was born in Baltimore, Md, but only spent the first four years of my life there before moving to San Francisco. The only other places I've spent a significant amount of time are in London, England, Rome, Italy and Montego Bay, Jamaica! Now, how do any of those influences factor into SouthernSpeak??

Something not quite right with that test, I'd say.

I was raised all around, being the daughter of a Navy man, but I lived in Florida for 21 years as an adult and have lived in Texas for the last 3 years.

I really would have thought I would be more Dixie than that.
