Carroll O'Connor and/or Norman Lear deliberately designed Archie to be an over the top character to get a point across but be entertaining at the same time.

The Rush Limbaugh persona started out as a character. I'm not defending him, but if you compare his show in the late 80's/early 90's to now, it was actually kinda funny back then. I listened once in a while under conditions where AM radio was the only option. Somewhere around the mid 1990's Rush either started to believe his own bullshit, or was paid to ramp up the rhetoric. Possibly both. Now, whether it's the oxycontin or otherwise, I don't believe he knows the difference anymore between rhetoric and reality.
