2. Non stop paperwork
And some of these kids, bless them, are dumber than a box of hair...one asked me what number June was when I was walking him through the application for federal student aid. :wtf:

4. I was at the Supermarket Saturday night
And a kid at the register turns to the kid at the next register and asks "How much is 264 1nd 51?

It took me a nanosecond to answer him, but what hurt was that kids can't even think for themselves and add in their heads any more. We taught our beautiful daughter to do math in her head while she was little (see the numbers, add the numbers).

And it's NOT the teachers but the curriculum.

8. Student Finance Planning for an auto tech school
I help them navigate the financial aid maze and make sure they get everything they need to get to school. It's a pretty neat job, and I get to help a lot of lower income kids and adults who want to get out of the poverty they're in. It's just been sucking lately because two of the women in my office went out on disability, and I've had to pick up some of their workload. I went from 24 students to 90 in about 3 days, and one of the admissions reps I'm having to deal with is a TOTAL pain in the ass, micromanaging, constantly calling, etc. He even managed to piss off my boss with his antics. Fortunately, he's cooled down a little, because I think my boss told him off.

9. I'm sure they tripled your pay

when you tripled your number of students, right??? ;)

Glad your boss is taking care of things... and that really sounds like an amazing thing you're doing. Good for you for making it easier for people who might be otherwise deterred from going to school.

11. LOL, nope
BUT I did just get a $2/hr raise when my contract was up in December and I was permanently hired on. :D They are sure making me work for it though!

It's a great job, even when it drives me nuts. These kids aren't going because their parents are making them, they REALLY love cars and their passion and enthusiasm comes out in their voices. I get to help them realize a dream. :) It really makes me appreciate what I have, too. I work with a lot of older students who have fucked up credit, stuck in dead end jobs and want to get back on track doing something they love. It's awesome. And way better than working for the credit card company and getting yelled at like my last job!

Somewhat off-topic, but do you ever listen to Car Talk? I don't really know anything about cars, but those guys crack my shit up!!! :D

24. ... I am trying VERY hard not to add an addendum to that
partly because A ) it would be crude enough to get this thread locked, and B ) I know it's damn near impossible to improve on an Oscar Wilde one-liner, so I don't want to try. :)

6. I've often fantasized about having a desk job
I've worked in blue collar manual labor jobs since I was about 20. Currently, I drive a truck and have been doing that for the past 11 years. The driving part ain't bad, but I do have to unload the truck which kind of sucks. I work 57 hours a week which isn't too hateful for a trucker. Most of my trucking brothers and sisters put in the legal limit which is 70 hours a week, and some even put in more than that which is illegal.

I've never had a desk job or any kind of white collar job. Which would you prefer? Do you have any blue collar experience with which to compare your current job?

10. I've never worked with my hands per se
The closest was stock work in one of my many shitty retail jobs. I vastly prefer this job, if for no other reason I can mess around on DU. :) Also, living in AZ makes me never want to be outside during certain times of the year.

How's trucking been treating you lately? I have a lot of students coming into our school (it's an auto tech school) who are truckers and increased fuel costs and regulations are really cutting down on their ability to make a living.

21. Trucking is treating me alright
I am a company driver so I don't have any job related expenses. I made the most money in my life last year and this year promises to be even better. I'm also home every day and I have the weekends off. It is by far the best job I've ever had.

25. Sweet!
Glad it's working out so well for you. I think it's the owner-operators that are seeing the hard time. I have one guy who's going to school for diesel stuff, he made over 100k last year and just barely broke even.

22. Three back to back FAFSA calls
The way those work, I tell them the website for the federal student aid application, let them fill it out and if they have questions they ask me. So a lot of it involves a lot of sitting around waiting, unless they need a lot of help. Thankfully the one I'm on right now and the previous one, the moms are computer savvy and know how to read a tax return.

So I multitask! :D

I never thought they were too hard to figure out when I was in college. Today, I'm a tax accountant. Go figure! :)

By the way Chovexani, go check out your "Best of DU" thread in GLBT when you get a chance. Somebody really pissed me off today, and I posted all about it.

34. order in a pizza and share with the next appointment...
say it's complimentary.

I guess this assumes you have face-to-face meetings. If not order one for you and the next parents. Have it delivered.

36. A great idea, but sadly no dice
All my appointments are over the phone. Our little office in Phoenix supports our five campuses around the country, so we do everything by phone.

Pizza does sound good, though. I might order from the one place in the state that has decent pies when I get home.
