13. Did you ever hear the stories about the shooting of "Jaws"?
Not to make light of Roy Scheider's death -- it was a shock to hear of it, and he was still very active, creatively and, his obituary has it, politically -- but while looking up his film and TV credits on IMDB, I found the following film, The Shark Is Still Working:

http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0469185/

Back when Bob Costas had his late-night talk show, Roy Scheider's costar Richard Dreyfuss was a guest and spun some wicked tales about the filming of Jaws, notably that the production was plagued by continual malfunctions of the mechanical shark. Sample loudspeaker announcement: "The shark is not working. The shark is not working." On one memorable occasion, the message became: "The shark is working. The boat is sinking."

I'm going to have to see that documentary.

Anyway, while searching for information on Scheider, I ran across the following tribute on Vanity Fair writer James Wolcott's blog:

http://www.vanityfair.com/politics/blogs/wolcott/2007/05/in_my_capacity_.html

The New York Times obituary:

http://www.nytimes.com/2008/02/11/movies/11scheider.html?hp

Living in Sag Harbor, Mr. Scheider continued to appear in films and lend his voice to documentaries, becoming, Ms. Seimer said, increasingly politically active. With the poet Kathy Engle, he helped to found the Hayground School in Bridgehampton, dedicated to creating an innovative, culturally diverse learning environment for local children. At the time of his death, Mr. Scheider was involved in a project to build a film studio in Florence, Italy, for a series about the history of the Renaissance.

18. Anyone remember the shark's name?
It was called Bruce, apparently after Spielberg's attorney.

Jaws was a masterpiece, especially the second half when it's just the three men on the Orca.

25. This makes me so sad
I saw Jaws as a kid and was afraid to even swim in the pool for an entire summer.

My mom's catch phrase when anything went wrong was "We're gonna need a bigger boat." I lost her 2 1/2 years ago, now it feels like another piece is gone.

GodSpeed Roy.

27. How sad.
I must be the only one who liked "2010". Roy Scheider was wondeful in it...as he was in all of his movies.

That's sad to hear. :-(
