Stupid smoke detector on TV ad scared the CRAP out of our cats
I thought it was ours going off, but it was just an ad. The cats are freaked out, especially Morrissey, who's very sensitive about such things anyway. GRRRRR!!!

1. I work in sound for a living and am often fascinated at which sounds gain an animals
attention, and what does not. Most things that are emotional cues for humans have little drawing power for the animals, at least in my small experience.

I recently watched the Herzog classic "Nosferatu" and the rat noises gained partial attention from the resident cat. Not much else does.

2. You know, I've never seen that, strangely
Will have to watch it. And you're right - it's really interesting to see what they get interested in. Morrissey was absolutely mesmerized by "Meet The Press" this morning, particularly David Broder. Very strange!

3. My cats don't react to anything on TV except for the sound of a
doorbell. They think someone is at our door so they race for the door, upset that their kitty radar didn't warn them in advance that someone was at the door.

4. You're lucky...my parrot mimicks sounds she hears...over and over and over
Our smoke detector was malfunctioning and going off whenever my daughter opened the door to her bathroom after taking a shower. The steam would set off the alarm.

My parrot just LOVED this sound as she saw also how it made us react. You cannot distinquish between the real thing and the bird, and it is just ANNOYING. If you have a bird, you will know they crave attention , so whatever does the trick it the sound du jour.

Fortunately, it has been some time since she has done this, but I dread hearing a commercial which will remind her....

She is a hoot, don't get me wrong, but if you are on the phone or want some peace and quiet, that ain't happening.

9. My mom has a parrakeet who does the smoke detector
They had a big fire in the fireplace that set off the smoke detector and ever since then he does it. Fortunately he puts the "beep" in the middle of various chirps and burbles so its pretty clear that its the bird and not the detector.

7. I hate the ads with sirens
When I'm driving.

ESPECIALLY if I'm speeding!

:scared:

'cause then I slow down real quick.

8. barking
the only thing on TV that seems to get our 2 greyhounds attention is if there's a segment/scene in a show where there are other greyhounds barking.

they'll get right up, ears standing straight, tails at attention and they watch it intently

any other barking dog - they don't care

the cats are a bit different - when DUH-bya is on TV, they either leave the room or hack up a hairball
