Most Boring Lounge Topic Ever...
Edited on Mon Feb-11-08 12:08 PM by Jeff In Milwaukee
Let's talk staplers, shall we?

I handle a lot of paperwork, and I've got this stapler that can barely make it through four pages without the staple crumpling. Is it cheap staples (do they even make "premium quality" staples) or is it the design of my stapler?

Before I go out and buy a new stapler, I'm wondering if I should change the brand of staples I'm buying.

And that, Lounge Lizards, gives you an insight into white-hot excitement that is the life of Jeff in Milwaukee.

3. Start with the staples, not the stapler.
I had that happen when my office switched staple brands. Besides, a stapler is a pretty crude instrument in functionality. It's kind of like saying "this fork isn't working right".

4. What kind of stapler are you using? What weight paper are you using?
How many sheets of paper are you typically attempting to staple together?

I'll admit to being a lover of this boring topic because I had the same problem until last year, when I splurged and bought a lovely, practical Stanley/Bostitch stapler. :)

8. Typically...
I'm stapling 10-20 pages. At 20 pages, any attempt to staple is futile. But even getting 5-6 pages to staple can be a problem

It's a generic stapler -- no identifying brand name or anything like that. That's why I'm leaning toward a better stapler. Despite one of the posts upthread, I think if the think isn't engineering properly, the staples won't pierce the paper easily. It's a little (but maybe not a lot) more complicated than a fork.

14. That's ridiculous, in my opinion.
Sounds like it's your stapler. I checked Staples. Here's a link to the Bostitch staplers that can be shipped to Milwaukee. (I don't work for Stanley Bostitch, but Bostitch is such a renowned brand name that most here in Switzerland call all staplers "Bostitch.")

5. Hi, my name is Jeff, too, and I have a similar problem.
*stands up in front of the staple/stapler support group*

My stapler does the same thing. Or is it the staples? I can't decide which. What I end up doing is stapling as much as the stapler will allow. Then I pick up the rest of the paper and do the same thing. Then, when I have two or more sections, I will staple the sections together.

Thankfully, what I am stapling is sections of a manuscript, for my own use. When I submit my writing, I do not staple it. But I like stapled pages; it's just easier to work with if I wanted to do some editing by hand.

I don't know if I used the words "staples" and/or "stapler" more than you did in your post, so in an effort to take first place...staple stapler stapler staples staples staple stapler staplerstaplerstaplestaplers. Thank you.

15. I can recommend highly the Boston Vista electric pencil sharpener.
My mother sent it to me from the states about eight years ago, when electric pencil sharpeners still were considered heresy here -- and when I had about a jillion colored pencils that I could not hope to sharpen to a nice point in fewer than eight hours. :hi:

The Boston Vista uses four AA batteries. I've used it for several hours, every six months or so, for the past eight years. I've changed the batteries only THREE times. :)

18. Think nail gun for heavy duty jobs
A stapler and ammo are important tools. It's when you start worrying about paper clips it's time to reconsider your life priorities or get a life - whatever.

19. get an electric
I had the same problem... my hand-held would take 5 tries to get thru 3 sheets of 24# paper without the staple being messed up. I think maybe the squeezing of the stapler caused it to slide a bit from side-to-side or something, causing the troubles.

A cheap electric one (about $20) does it right every time and is a tiny bit of fun in your office, like a baby robot.
