28. First Time I Watched It, I Said The EXACT Same Thing. EXACTLY.
Edited on Mon Feb-11-08 07:44 PM by OPERATIONMINDCRIME
Then, it was on tv months later. I gave it another try, because this time I knew what to expect (first time, I had alllll sorts of different expectation). Then a funny thing happened... I actually, like, started to GET it. When I lowered my expectations, I was all of a sudden able to see comic aspect of the movie. Each time I've watched it since, I've laughed harder and harder. It's definitely not something for everyone, but I'm tellin ya, it's friggin brilliant! You should really give it another try, but this time with your mind already knowing how completely stupid it is. It's meant to be done that badly. It's meant to be a total spoof. It's meant to be mind blowing stupid. Let the corniness in. I was in the same position as you the first time, with a total feeling of WTF? This thing sucks!!! But now, it cracks me the fuck up. I'm so glad I gave it a second try.

I know that's it's supposed to be stupid and is a spoof, but I still didn't like it.... maybe I'm too grumpy/unfunny? snobby? I don't think so.... I actually like kung fu movies, and I like corny comedies, but KP just didn't do it for me.

80. I am not above listing even the ones that i consider my 'guilty pleasures', and
like "Live and Let Die", or "Twister".

As a rule, i'm not much of a film snob. I try to see a few indies here and there, especially if they did well at Cannes or Sundance, but just because a film DID do well at the festivals does not automatically guarantee that it will make it to my 'gotta see' list.

Absolutely goddamn right.

It's in my DVD player(before I read this thread) paused where Disko threatens to hang himself with an eel if the Jenny Cushman beats him back to Gloucester.

They're all dead now except for Mickey Rooney.

Freddie Bartholomew (RIP) gets top billing, and gives one of the best child performances ever.

I suppose I should have put Rocky Horror on my list, since I was in a cast for about a year. Victor Victoria is another I should have put on.

Fargo was great, too!

And, I just love Orlando. The little asides to the camera were hilarious.

78. If you like funny Cary Grants, you should see The Grass is Greener
It does have a little more serious undertone than the Bringing up Baby types, but it is high arch British comedy at its best, with a delectable cast of Grant, Deborah Kerr, Robert Mitchum and Jean Simmons. I love movies which rely on actual dialogue, with no special effects or shoot out scenes. (well, there actually is a gun in Grass, but...)

Young Frankenstein
Casablanca
Pride and Prejudice
(the 1940 version. Fooled ya, didn't I?)
Born Romantic
Persuasion
Sense and Sensibility
Henry V (1989)
A Midwinter's Tale

Of course I can be persuaded to watch a good many more -- Enchanted April, Cold Comfort Farm, et cetera.

And judging by the lists on this thread, there are several DUers I'd love to be marooned with, as long as we had a DVD player and our supplies...

110. Only one person here
has Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid in their top 10?

And nobody has Little Big Man, or the Graduate (one word: "plastics")?

OK, I'll hobble on back to the Seniors forum.

Your choice of movies suck, but welcome!

I am so totally kidding...a true DU welcome. :)

Did you notice in American Beauty that as the roles changed (Spacey and Annette Benning) so did the costumes? As Spacey's character got more open, so did the color of his clothes. By the dinner scene when they go at it Spacey is wearing brighter colors than he had before, and Benning's character starts wearing plainer, drab clothes as their characters switch roles? Great movie making, and a reminder for me of Ken Russell's "The Cook the Thief His Wife & Her Lover".
