What are "Fins and Spinneys" ?? As in...
"Romping with his school chums in the fins and spinneys, when the twilight bathed the hedgerows .....

I love Gil Chesterton!!!

FWIW, I think "fins" is probably "fens" which is a kind of marshland. I have no idea what a "spinney" is.

2. a fen is a
low land that is covered wholly or partly with water unless artificially drained and that usually has peaty alkaline soil and characteristic flora (as of sedges and reeds)

a spinney is
a small wood with undergrowth
