1. I'm guessing only if "great" is used to mean "large."

3. Exactly
"Great" to me could only mean mint copies of 1950's Blue Note, Prestige, Clef and Contemporary jazz recordings; mint early 1960's Bill Evans recordings on Riverside; mint original Beatles UK albums; mint early 60's Rolling Stones albums on Decca; mint Elvis Presley Sun singles; mint first press Velvet Underground albums...stuff like that.

...and yeah, I know I'm in the minority, but eBay can bite me in the same way that Yahoo can bite me.

But Yahoo can bite me MORE, because I really, really, really dislike Yahoo.

Really.

16. By my calculations it would take over 285 years to listen to the whole collection.
That's without taking breaks for eating, sleeping, etc..

I would blow my head off long before getting through the first thousand.

He has owned a record store for 40+ years.

and from what I heard today on NPR it is truly drool worthy.

Millions of 45's. Of course you youngsters wouldn't remember those...

Now get off my lawn and pull up your damn baggy hip-hop pants...

42. Record Rama (the store)
Is a wonderland. The guy is REALLY nice, too. His hope is that a museum or some such thing will buy the collection so that it can be preserved. The estimated worth of it is actually something like $70 million, so 3 is a steal.

I hope he gets his wish and gets to retire gracefully. And someplace warm. It's DAMN cold here today.

23. Hey
I got the world's greatest music collection:

Every Dylan Album in vinyl: about half of them in Mono
Every Neil Young Album

and a 45 of the Beatles singing "I Wanna Hold Your Hand" in German "Komm Gibt me deine Hand"

and a Scott Joplin Ragtime tune recorded off a Piano Poll he made.

and Travis Tritt

24. No need to buy the collection.
Just download every song for free using LimeWire or somesuch. Shouldn't take more that 300 years or so. But think of the savings.

mostly burned from my personal collection, but yes, that guy is a monster! I wish him luck. There must be a few gems in there. How can a Stones album be worth 10K? Must be the only version in existence.

40. I doubt it.
My brother probably has the biggest collection. Mainly records, but now he is getting into CD's too. He has so many, the room they are stored in is sinking from the weight.

Hundreds of thousands, many unopened. Some worth a lot of money. From the 30's on. I keep telling him they aren't worth anything unless he sells them, but; he just keeps collecting.

If he dies before his wife, someone is going to get quite a deal. She says she will sell them all to the first serious offer.

47. This guy has been trying to sell it for years as long as he came with the deal.
He has the reputation, locally, of being a hard nose shmuck who only sees dollar signs. His prices were outrageous and his staff was purposefully rude, reflecting how he is.

All the best to him. All of his money won't buy him any softer karma. That'll be up to him and he'll have to do a lot of front loading before he kicks off.

48. Turned down $28 mil? Now accepting $3 mil?
...I get that circumstances have changed for the man. That the past is not the present, etc. Still, how the heck do you kiss off $25 million? He might have put his grandchildren through college for that! Nobody's lost that much money in Pittsburgh since Henry Frick got snippy with Andy Carnegie. Or since whoever bought the Pirates bought the Pirates.

49. he didn't turn down anything.
He didn't turn down 28 million. CDNow (a bmg company) offered
that amount but a week later declared bankruptcy. The library
of congress was supposed to buy it and hire him too for
100,000 a year and the library backed out noting increasingly
scarce federal funding as an excuse.
