My daughter got several gifts of lip gloss for her 5th birthday?
Isn't she a bit young for that? This was gifts from other 5 & 6 year olds at her 5th birthday party this past week. And, two Barbie dolls as well.

I feel like i'm fighting a losing battle sometimes. at least she got some books.

1. That does seem very, very young.
And it absolutely shouts of training girls young to think about how they look instead of thinking about what they want to do/be.

3. IMHO, just a few years early for make-up. But I wouldn't make a big deal of it if she wants to use
Edited on Wed Feb-20-08 11:10 PM by Radio_Lady
it. I'd restrict it to home and make sure she washes it all off before going to bed. (Makeup will ruin your bedding; trust me.)

My ten-year-old granddaughter uses some very pink and really shiny lip gloss and it makes her look pretty. She looks beautiful without it, too.

Take a look at this face painting job! We just love these artistic people who do this sort of thing.

28. It was done at a local fair a couple of years ago, and didn't get the name of the artist.
Edited on Thu Feb-21-08 10:50 AM by Radio_Lady
It was accomplished with an airbrush and then hand painted as well.

There were artists on the street in Las Vegas who did rapid airbrush painting on canvas. Those talented people do work that is somewhat amateurish, but astounding.

4. one is never too young for fruity scented soft lips
I'm 40(ish) and I remember using Bonne Bell lip smackers at about that age. Granted, I turned into a raging hussy but otherwise I think the effects were pretty harmless. Look at it this way, this way she won't be swiping your chapstick and getting kindergartener germs all over it and giving you the flu.

12. Bonne Bell
Yeah, I was big into that at that age. The lemon one was my favorite.

Remember "Kissing Potion"? The really slimy roll-on stuff? I loved it too!

Ah, the late 70s/early 80s. Great time to be a kid if no one in your life had a camera. :toast:

I remember both. In first grade, my favorite was Dr. Pepper Bonne Bell. I remember getting the jumbo size tubes!

I didn't use "Kissing Potion" until I was older. Boy, did I think I was hot!

5. Would you feed it to her?
Where do you think lip gloss goes when it "wears off"? The typical wearer of lip gloss/lip stick eats like 5 tubes per year. Note, I am citing that number purely from memory but it's in that ballpark.

Something to think about.

anythings.

They're now top students and kickass soccer players (well, one is kickass). And nary a cosmetic to be found, unless you count chap stick.

We tried to just not make too much fuss about the things that didn't matter, and make a big fuss about the really cool things.

10. As long as they're colorless
I wouldn't worry about it too much. Think of it like you would a tube of chapstick. Face it, it's better for her to have her own than to borrow her bestest friend's, which is what'll happen.

That's still gonna happen, too...but hey, every once in a while denial's a self-defense thing.

as long as it's transparent. It can be kind of nice in the cold dry weather.

Just keep emphasizing your admiration of women who are or were intelligent, courageous, innovative, etc, so she'll catch on to the idea that there's much more to a woman's life than her appearance.

18. I do that all the time
we always emphasize how important school & learning are to her. I found it interesting that when they asked her in her kindergarten what she wanted to be when she grew up, her answer was a dentist. The girls in her class mostly answered "doctor" or "veternarian" or similar. The boys answered things like baseball players or superheroes.

4 to 5 is when they really get a kick out of dressing like a princess.
By 9 they'd rather not.
Start to worry when they're 11 & 12

21. Lip Gloss is just fancy Chapstick....
My nieces had Barbies--including the Dream House! Both of them got athletic scholarships; one's gotten her Master's. Your daughter's too young for eyeliner & mascara, but "female" stuff will not warp her little mind.

Keep buying her books. (How about some dinosaurs, too? The dinos can attack the Barbies! Or vice versa.)

24. I agree with all the people that have posted about clear lipgloss.
I personally do not like Barbie or Bratz dolls, but that is me.

She should, however, feel like she is a princess... so I recommend purchasing, "The Paper Bag Princess," by Robert Munsch (the DUer by the same name made me remember this book!). It is one of my favorite books for young girls, in that it depicts a strong female character.

34. For Christmas this year one of my friends
sent my 5 year old daughter a gladstone bag with children's make up in it. The case is pink satin with "Princess" written in purple on it. Inside were 6 or 7 plastic trays filled with lip glosses, scented creams, glitter sticks, eye shadow, nail decals and nail polish. The kidlet loves it. She smears the gloss all over her face and comes in to show us how beautiful she is. I was going to take the thing away and ration its use, but I realized that if I let her play with it, the quicker it gets used up and I can throw it out. She also got a Barbie doll and an Ariel doll from 2 different friends. My only concern is the nail polish - I may have to do something about those. I feel your pain.

36. My Mom...
Edited on Thu Feb-21-08 05:26 PM by AnneD
was a girly girl, I was a confirmed tom boy, and my daughter was a girly girl. It must skip a generation.

I could have cared less but my little girl was in to it. I think lip gloss in the clear and light shades are perfectly fine-and in the winter time it protects against chapped lips. We scrubbed our face before we went to bed. That is all a little girl of 5 needs. We saved the perfume for special occasions (when I could be down wind).

They love to be all grown up and they don't understand the sexualization thing-they just want to be pretty just like Mommy. Consider it flattery and leave them be. Since when did it become a crime to make believe. Just set your guidlines as to when it is appropate and let her have fun. We still laugh at my daughter giving me Tinkerbell 'makeovers'.
