What The Blu Ray Format Really Means To You
The movie that you paid to see in the theaters, and then you bought when it came out on VHS. Then, you bought again when it came out on DVD, and then you bought once more because of the special anniversary edition with bonus features and the director's commentary. Then, you bought again because it contained the director's final cut with an alternate ending.

Yes, that movie. You will have to buy it again when it comes out on Blu Ray.

1. Eh...
Not really.

Blu-Ray players = backwards-compatible with DVD and CD formats. No need to replace something you already own on DVD. Personally I'm looking forward to the consumer price-point on Blu-ray drives for PCs reaching a reasonable level...50GB per dual-layer disc will make archiving data much less of a pain in the arse.

2. But, You Gotta Buy The Special Re-Released for Blu Ray, Right?
Sure, it's backwards compatible, but you have to have the re-release for Blu Ray, right?

3. Nope
Not unless it's something like Lawrence of Arabia, where the HD-DVD makes a tremendous difference.

7. And That's How They Get You
Media giants make a ton on re-releasing their catalogs on new technologies, CDs, VHS, DVDs, IPods, and now Blu Ray.

10. Not only that, but Blu-ray (and HD DVD) players will also upconvert your SD DVDs to near HD quality
So unless you have a really large (50+ inch) 1080p TV, there really isn't much point in replacing DVDs with Blu Ray discs since you probably won't notice much difference.

5. Not this time, Pilgrim...
...while I did buy "Special Edition / Directors Cut / etc" DVDs of movies that I already owned in the past, times (and finances) have changed.

Here's a perfect example:

1). The movie was / is great, and I loved having it on the original DVD

2). The "Tom Hanks Extended Cut"...I sort of know "where" the extra stuff is but it really adds nothing to the original for me. It actually annoyed me because I pretty much have the original memorized line-for-line like "This Is Spinal Tap" or "Shaun Of The Dead." Yes, I've watched it THAT many times.

3). The "extras"...lots of Tom sitting around saying "The cast was REALLY great to work with" and the cast saying "Tom was REALLY great to work with." Fun documentary of "the band" on a promo tour to Japan, but...

...I decided to watch this last weekend and when the main menu came up on screen I chose the "original theatrical version" to watch and didn't re-watch any of the extras.

My theory is that MOST people watch the extras ONCE (or not at all).

So the Blu-Ray parade is gonna have to pass on my without THIS boy's hard-earned cash.

:toast:

9. Do You Really Want HD Porn?
Do you really want to see every pore, scab, and pock mark?

My plan is to smear Vaseline on the screen.

Soft focus.
