Scientists discover reason behind penis's shape....
Damn - you mean it's not supposed to be conical?

"Scientists believe the shape of the penis may have evolved to help men remove the semen of love rivals during sex.

Tests led a team of US researchers, headed by Professor Gordon Gallup, to conclude that the penis acts as a "semen displacement device" and its shape has evolved in part to displace another man's semen.

The team from the State University of New York believe the thrust of the penis during sex may help to clear a woman's reproductive system of a previous lover's semen.

They tested their theory in experiments using latex phalluses, an artificial vagina and a mixture of starch and water."

I don't know what women these scientists like to hang out with, but personally I prefer it if my partner hasn't still got someone else's filthy yoghurt up there when it's my turn - ever heard of monogamy guys?

1. Well...uh, er...
If the penis is shaped as it is to remove semen from the vagina, how do babies get made?

Damn, your comment was spot on! By the way, because of you, I just HAD to rent the Blackadder I DVD this weekend! :P

2. Glad I'm inspiring righteous behaviour for once!
Apparently the idea is that you stop thrusting as soon as you have fired off your full magazine......which seems a fairly reasonable assumption, if only for "mechanical" reasons!

Sorry, that's just the first thing I thought of when I saw that subject line.

13. WOW--an IgNobel prize in the making!
If this doesn't make it into the Journal of Irreproducible Results--well, then the editors have no sense of irony whatsoever. Would give the journal's title a whole new meaning, for one thing.

14. I hope they keep reading their science books
because the whole principle is absurd. It only takes one squiggle , to impregnate a woman. Once that squiggle has achieved polination, it doesn't matter how the dude's penis is shaped nor does it much matter how much residual sperm is left in the canal from a previous encounter. You can't even logically build a case for it.

16. but there are other examples
there are other examples of other types of animals that include a rejection of sperm because of another males' sperm.

I don't remember which ones at the moment, but I do know that that's one way nature gets its kicks.

17. But Shirley.....
sperms can live for several hours and gradually make their way up through the woman's system, so if the previous "encounter" was fairly recent then removing the majority of semen from the vagina would reduce the number of sperm there and lessen the odds of one getting through.....

Wouldn't it?

19. It depends..
The Great apes have small testicles because they do not have to compete they have a little harem going on ..But the chimps have big testicles because it is a free for all and they need to produce more sperm.

21. At the peak of a woman's fertility
when she's technically "in heat" one good thrust and she's impregnated. Yes, it's true that male sperm can live for several hours and female sperm can actually live for several days. Male sperm are faster swimmers, female sperm live longer. Women impregnated at the peak of fertility are far more likely to give birth to male children for that reason. If the encounter were further from the point of maximum fertility they'd be more likely to be female infants.

Using the logic provided by this team of 'scientists' the conical shape of the tip could only eliminate female children and the odds are significant that a woman exposed to sperm at her peak is already bearing a fertilised egg of a male child; so no genetic information can be passed along which would preselect for the shape of the successful male's penis.

In fact it would tend to indicate that it would unfavourably balance toward male children and that females would be more rare and prized births than history bears out.

23. but males are the "weaker" sex
...as far as living to reproductive age goes, so that could also account for maintaining a balance.

18. not with modern homo-sapiens' highly evolved
reproductive habits. But in the precursors to homo sapiens, surely the argument could be made. Most human women outside of the porn and ho kingdoms don't tend to have multiple male partners in a short time span, but alot of non-human primates (and countless other animals) do. Given that the swimmers are seldom deposited exactly where they need to be, and that swimming to that location takes time, it makes perfect sense that an intrusion during the swim of an object shaped to effectively vacuum-sweep the area could prove an evolutionary advantage to the latest comer (pun oh-so-thoroughly intended).

15. But seriously...
I know I cannot come close to anything like the pocket *ahem, but this is interesting research for a few reasons...

like- scientists always assumed that males were the only ones who "normally" had the urge to roam their foam, so to speak, and this would indicate that females would've also most likely been interested in a buffet rather than a one course meal.

..which may mean that earlier human social groups may have been like bonobo chimps, rather than common chimps. bonobos use sex as a way to bond their community..they don't seem to waste a lot of time killing each other, in other words, and would seem to make Kristol's statement that "peace is unnatural" a lie according to the "natural" world.

also, the assumption for a while is that human males have bigger, uh, packages than they need in order to fertilize a female, so the idea was that females selected for larger packages, maybe for reasons that had to do with, oh, say, stimulation..

but maybe size would make a larger package more efficient at getting rid of competing sperm, if that were an issue for his, uh, issue.

it's a better system than some primates who kill the offspring of their rivals to bring the female back to estrus so his progeny will live...forget if it's a type of baboon or organgutan who does that.

I just thought they were that shape because it would help them hang on... :)
