3. It's basically a case of two different countries trying to come up with the grosses thing they can
do to lettuce, and coming up with almost the same thing.

Actually I've never tried kimchi. But sauerkraut makes me want to purge. So I'm assuming that I won't like kimchi either.

17. First time my wife opened a jar, our smoke alarm went off
I told her the stuff smelled horrible through both the jar and the plastic bag. She told me it was all in my head. Then she opened the jar and the smoke alarm went off. I think it spurred one of the longest laughing attacks we ever had.

Over the years I have gotten used to kimchee and actually like it now. But we have never had it set off our smoke alarm since that one time.

18. yeah, I can't stand the stuff
I had a roommate in graduate school who was korean and he filled our refrigerator with various pickled odds and ends.... man, I hated that guy. He too up 1/2 of the fridge shared by 6 people with his pickled disgustingness! He also spend a lot of time cooking what I can only assume were fish necks - smelled up the whole apartment. Now I don't think I can ever have korean food again... even though some of the stuff he made was really good.

Never been a big fan. Tried mixing the Korean cousins homemade Kimchi with the German cousins homemade Sauerkraut. Still not a big fan of either. Not a little fan either. In fact I second the advice. Do not try the Kimchi.

25. You have to take the mold off the top first. That's the key.
And be sure to put it back when you're done.

Kimchi is just sauerkraut past its expiration date.

It's got to be vegan though, no shrimp paste. A friend's mom makes the absolute best homemade Kimchi.

In fact..I keep a large jar of it in my refrigerator at all times (I make my own). Kimchi rawks! Especially over rice with a drizzle of sesame oil...drool. My husband was stationed in Korea for a year, and he says the stuff I make is just like the stuff he ate over there.

44. I have never had kimchi
but you know what is seriously evil? Okra. :puke: It's SLIMY, for Pete's sake! :scared: I'm convinced that okra is the vegetable equivalent of a slug, although I must admit that I have never tried to pour salt on my okra to see if it will shrivel up and die (or at least become less slimy).

(Disclaimer: Yes, I was raised in the South, and yes, I have had fried okra, which is probably the only form of okra that is even marginally edible, IMO. Even so, you can't fry all the slime away...ugh.)

Otherwise, after the world economy collapses, you're all gonna be dead of scurvy before spring, and then we're gonna take all your oil and gas and burn it all up doing pointless and destructive things with our motor vehicles.

SAVE THE WORLD, MAN, LEARN TO LOVE KIMCHI!!!

46. You're just not trying the right KIND of kimchi
Cabbage kimchi can be pure evil (ask for "summer kimchi," because I think you're getting winter kimchi).

Turnip kimchi (looks like slivers of radish, and for the longest time I thought that's what it was) and bean sprout kimchi are both great. Try those. You'll never see them anywhere except in a Korean restaurant, and they're rare in one outside Korea.
