For those over 40: Have you used mineral makeup?
If so, what do you think about them? Are they only good for the younger people, or ok for anyone?

1. I'm 45 and have used Bare Escentuals for about 3-4 years
I love it. I hate the caked-on look of liquid makeup. I'm fortunate in that my skin is thus far relatively unlined - I don't know how well it works on lined skin, but I imagine you'd just have to blend it well.

4. Yeah mine is unlined as well, except for laugh lines around the eyes
I'm 45 too, so that helps, thanks!

3. I use Bare Essenctuals and I'm 45

I love it.

I'm a very thin-skinned white woman, so it gives me more of a complexion without my veins showing through my skin. I look healthier. The colors are truer and, double bonus, it's easier to clean off at night.

I can't say enough good about it. I'm a lifer now. :-)

although, I think lildreamer posted a lower cost alternative a while ago if $$ is an issue.

edit: a jar of foundation powder will last me about five months. And I'm pretty sure I will never need eyeshadow again. lol

6. Count me as another 45+ Bare Escentuals user.
very gentle to my skin, good coverage, fun colors. My skin is pretty good, but I do have a little bit of crepey skin on my eyelids. I don't find that the minerals emphasize it. They are in "powder" form, but really aren't powder. Not cheap to buy, but they last FOREVER, because you have to use so little of it. This is especially true of eyeshadows and blushes. High level of pigmentation in those items means you use just a few flecks.

Good stuff! And good prices when you buy sets or kits from QVC.

8. Definately over 40
and I love mineral make-up. I use Bare Minerals and it really does a nice job of evening out the color and blotchiness on my face without caking.

9. yes it stinks
Edited on Tue Mar-18-08 01:16 PM by pitohui
the frustrating thing is that when they put it on you, they do it in a special light that really evens it out

then you get home in real light or get out in real daylight and you see how blotchy it is, it's truly horrifying

don't get scammed like i did

if you have super young smooth skin and a makeup artist's hand i guess it might be okay but it's the WORST for over 40 skin

and you folks over 40 who don't think you have lines, your first purchase should be a magnifying glass or a new pair of glasses, THEN buy the make-up, because you are in for a shock

remember how when we were younger we couldn't figure out why women over 40 looked like clowns in their make-up, well, i've figured it out, it's because plenty of them can't see up close any more and they haven't yet realized it

get your eyes checked first, then re assess the mineral makeup, i think you'll be very surprised

11. I think it's hilarious that you feel it necessary to try to invalidate everyone else's opinion.
You're obviously entitled to yours, but then you go a little too far and say that those of us over 40 who love the stuff are obviously vision-impaired.

Get over yourself.

It's not difficult makeup to apply, and if you use a moisturizer underneath, it does NOT emphasize lines. My vision is just fine, and I'm well-acquainted with my 5X mirror.

15. LOL, don't know if that was tongue in cheek or not, but funny as hell
probably some (or much) truth in it, too, but I can only speak for myself, and I'm laughing

:ah, ignorance is bliss... failing eyesight too:

10. I'm 43 and have used it for about five years.
I had great skin for starters (thank jeebus for good genes and no wrinkles), but even with a few fine lines, the mineral makeup is still great. Just make sure you use a moisturizer under it if lines are a big concern.

The SPF in Bare Minerals is VERY good, coverage is perfect, and it feels super-light. I don't think I'll ever go back to liquid makeup.

12. Me
You do need to moisturize really well before applying and blend, blend, blend. Also someone here on DU mentioned this a while back, it seems bizarre but it really works-- Monostat makes a "chafing" gel (http://www.drugstore.com/products/prod.asp?pid=139254&catid=33587&trx=GFI-0-EVGR-91292&trxp1=60&trxp2=139254&trxp3=1&trxp4=134&btrx=BUY-GFI-0-EVGR-91292) that works beautifully to make your skin ultra smooth and provides a really nice surface for the Bare Minerals on top. It's not made to be used as a makeup base but it works great for it. I get compliments on my skin when I wear Bare Minerals so unless people secretly think I look like a clown and are just trying to be kind...

13. On Delphi forums, you will find a forum called Mineral Makeup Mania
Edited on Tue Mar-18-08 01:35 PM by mtnester
WARNING - addicting ...you will see...BUT, you will find out everything you thought you knew.

http://forums.delphiforums.com/mineralmania/start

Their start page has lists of MMU companies, as well as other types of all natural companies (soaps, herbs, essential oils, skincare, etc)

There are also full blown forums for Bare Minerals (Escentuals), Philosophy, MAC, Make it Yourself, Garden of Wisdom, Be Beautiful Cafe....endless. That said, I would start with Mineral Makeup Mania. There are also some non Delphi places as well to get an overview of mineral makeup.

http://www.themineralmakeup.com/
http://www.makeup.com/forum/forums/show/6.page
http://www.makeuptalk.com/forums/f128/
http://makeuptalk.wordpress.com/

that said, I have used nothing BUT MMU for years...and not that crap with the bismuth in it from Bare Minerals and Sheer Cover...there are a lot of private, home based companies that are passionate, fabulous and follow FDA rules AND have better product for better pricing. I believe even Merle Norman is doing a REAL pure mineral makeup

You have to be careful what you are getting. The crap at the drugstore is NOT pure mineral..there are tons of parabens in these things as well as ingredients that are not mineral...label reading is your friend.

I am currently using stuff from Bare Faced Minerals
http://www.barefacedminerals.com/

Meow Cosmetics
http://www.meowcosmetics.com/

and U Glo Girl
http://www.uglogirl.com/

however, I will sample purchase when I am bored from many others.

Most home business makers have samples so you can buy a little to get a color match. Many places will absolutely work with you on a color match through photos or, if you have a sample of makeup you must, then have custom blending. Bare Faced Minerals make one with Vitamin E for...ahem...mature skin...there are so many blends, some with more mica, some with more zinc oxide...

One thing I have discovered, if you are going to use mineral makeup, your skincare regime has to be...sheesh...regular and meticulous. Since buffing is involved, you will learn more than you ever thought about brushes (synthetic and natural bristles) and sponges.

You will either love it and become addicted, or hate it...I do not think there is real middle ground. If you are a no chem/no syn person, it is a must. Plus, many are totally cruelty free and vegan as well. I would never go back to off the shelf makeup again.

Whew, fairly opinionated too! Sorry....no offense aimed at anyone who chooses and love BE, JI and Sheer Cover either

14. I use 'em. I'm well over 40.
I've used both Sevi and Arbonne mineral makeups (both vegan companies). I still have oily skin in the center of my face, so liquid foundations just make matters worse. On the non-oily areas, I apply a moisturizer (Beauty Without Cruelty spf 12 Vitamin C Lotion) under the makeup. I really like it, once I found the right shade (I'm neutral--who knew?!). I like the Sevi okay, but once I use it up, I'll probably go back to the Arbonne. Just realized Sevi isn't a sunscreen, and with my fair skin I feel like sun protection is important.

So, yeah. I use 'em. I like 'em. Oh, and I get compliments on my skin once in a while.

17. I am 37, but my face is 80...I don't like it and, as a makeup artist,
you don't get coverage and it is basically a powder. For max coverage, you should use a liquid and/or whipped base foundation. I use a tinted moisturizer because I like looking basically blazing white.

I look at it as an "Emperor's New Clothes" kind of thing. You'd get the same effect with a few different bases and bronzer...but to each his own.
