Poll question: Battle of the Bands: Marvin Gaye vs. David Bowie
It's another really tough choice between these two giants. Vote your choice.

4. I classify them as male singers
soul/rock/pop/r&b they both messed with and mixed it all up and are male singers first, right?

13. Yep, you're right about that
I tend to calss Marvin as a pop/soul/r&b guy and Bowie as a pop/rock kinda guy. "Let's get it on....ahhhh, baby, let's get it owaon...."

14. Both had definite phases of their individual careers, both creative,
and they both are truly great. It's a tough choice between them.

that more people aren't voting for Marvin, on this, the day before Valentine's Day.

Something is wrong here.

9. Wow, I've lost all faith in DU
I can't believe that Bowie isn't blowing marvin away. Not that Marvin is bad - he's got fun music, and was impressive in his genre - but come on, we're talking BOWIE here, a true visionary, someone who helped redefine and recreate rock music, who has always pushed further and beyond what he's done before, trying new things, exploring, being creative.

He's one of the true giants.

(please note: my subject was a bit of hyperbole)

16. Tied it up again
Marvin was cut in his prime though, so that would give Bowie the edge.

FYI: April 1, 2004 marks the 20th anniversary of Marvin's death.

21. Have to agree...
While I like them both, I saw Bowie live during the Ziggy Stardust tour. (yes, I'm dating myself there.) One of the best live "shows" I've ever witnessed. It was not merely a concert.

36. Ziggy Stardust concert must have been incredible.
I was in a college dorm room when I first heard Ziggy Stardust. I think I related to the tone of despair/vitality coming out of that vinyl. I called it "sarcastic angst". It still kills me to hear it.

Marvin is a bump on the musical road of history.

Bowie will be played for centuries to come, a vertiable Mozart.

Bowie is the best Male "Artist" in the last 30 years.

35. Can I vote for "Both"?
The influence of each is undeniable, albeit in differing areas of popular music. It's like asking "Would you rather lose a heart or both lungs?".

38. Sorry. Can't choose.
The two can't be compared. If you'd said "Marvin vs. Barry White" or "Bowie vs. Zevon", I'd be able to do it.
