X-POST Anyone here good with InDesign? Specifically text boxes?
I am working on a fill-in keepsake book that has many pages of prompts followed by journal lines.

Example:

The best part of the trip was_______________________________________
___________________________________________________________________

Some of the new friends we met ___________________________________
___________________________________________________________________

I know there is a way to create the text box so the lines fill-in around the text and look nice and even, but can't seem to find it in the help or manual. Anyone know? Thanks!

1. One way:
There is sure to be a different method, but one down-and-dirty thing I have done in the past is through the Tabs palette:

Once you have keyed all the type you need into your text box (including blank lines where needed), select all text as I have shown in my JPG below.

Then create a Right Justified tab near the far end of your text box as shown in my example. In the Leader box type an underscore _ and it will fill the blank sections of the tab with the underscore.

Finally, just enter a Tab after each line of type and at the beginning of each blank line and your text box should look like my example.

Like I said, I'm sure there is a more efficient method, but this will do the trick in a pinch!

Hope that helps.

2. That's what the pros do.
Go a step further and make it part of a Paragraph Style.

4. Definitely a good idea, so when I have to do something else like this in a few months
I will have the style set. Because I know I'll forget again.

5. Good to know, evlb.
I've been working in InDesign since it launched, but my work never really calls for a lot of that sort of type-specific thing. I always assumed I was whipping that together meatball-surgery-style.

Glad to know I was right. :)

3. THAT'S IT! THANK YOU! I couldn't remember for the life of me.
I work in InDesign so infrequently these days that I forget how to do everything in between projects. It sucks getting old.

7. Argh! Now for some reason the lines will not align with the text on the left.

It looks like I put in an indent or a tab or single space in front of all the lines without text. And I didn't, but I can't figure out the problem. Such a stupid thing to be taking up so much of my time.

8. Hmmm.
If you look in the JPG example I posted you will see that there are two tiny triangles, one on top of the other, above the 0 in the ruler. Make sure those are both all the way to the left. If not, that might be what is causing your problem.

9. No, it was just InDesign having a bad day. Everything was as it should be, it just
didn't feel like working. I closed the file, reopened it, and it was feeling better. :eyes:

Thanks! :hi:
