1. They're known now as Olive Garden, Popeye's, Cracker Barrel, and Denny's

No, I have no idea, though certainly Cracker Barrel and Denny's continue the time-honored tradition of racism.

We did have a Sambo's in my hometown when I was a kid, but it only lasted a few years.

4. Turns out Sambo's really was pure evil
never mind the name:

Battistone is also the original owner of the New Orleans Jazz in the NBA. He later moved the team to Utah and sold it.

:grr:

7. We used to go to a Sambo's in San Antonio every Sunday after church when I was a kid.
When you're a kid, of course, you rarely think of the racist angle (especially if you're white, like me...), but I don't know what my parents were thinking. My mother's parents were pretty openly racist, but my mother overcame that kind of upbringing to become very liberal.

I didn't know there was even one Sambo's left in existence. Coon Chicken Inn was featured prominently in Kevin Wilmott's blisteringly satirical film "C.S.A." It was portrayed as a fictional family restaurant in a hypothetical society where the Confederacy won the Civil War. Wilmott revealed at the end of the film that Coon Chicken Inn actually existed in real life, in of all places, Seattle.

9. There was a Sambo's about 1/4 mile from where I now live.
In the mid 80's, it was called "Village Inn", and for the last maybe 8-10 years, it has been a "Hooters".
