4. Whoah, where do you shop?
What are you getting?

I could get the cheese and the bread for $10 here.

Crackers, it depends. There are some damned expensive crackers out there.

5. Little mom n pop store. The only game in town. To get it cheaper we'd have
to go to Ellsworth's Hannaford or Shaw's. But then you have to factor in the gas it took to go there and back.

*Blah*

6. Oh, small town will do it.
I'm lucky. At least five bakeries in spitting distance and several cheese only stores.
That means somebody is going to have cheap prices.

Unless the Mrs goes to Whole Paycheck (aka Whole Foods) and then it's 50 bucks for a bagle (or so it seems)

7. My family left in town has said that Whole Paycheck is THE place to go in the winter for produce
because Hannaford's and Shaw's stuff is so sad in comparison. Of course come summer, there are the farmer's markets.

You do live in the best area in Maine for food.

9. There is a nice healthfood store in Ellsworth, but I have never gotten hubby
to go in there. I have been in with my dad a few times, though.

10. we have one supermarket here and the WallyWorld
I don't shop at WallyWorld

I was talking to the Deli Manager the other day and she said the managers of the store had a meeting and EVERYTHING is going up across the board.

Diesel prices are making deliveries to our little town which is 150 miles from the nearest interstate hiway very expensive.

I only feed the two of us and make most everything from scratch. last December I could score 5# of flour for $1, the best sale I've seen this month was $1.99. Flour has doubled in two months

milk is up from on sale at $2.50 a gallon to onsale for $3.69 a gallon.

Glad I put my garden in.

14. Whoa, that's steep!
I'm used to high grocery prices...it seems that everything costs more in LA, but I'm sure it's going to get worse.

I saw gas today for $3.96. Whee.

18. How big were the blocks of cheese?
Because if they were 20 pound blocks, I'd say you got a good deal.

19. My hubby and I made bread last weekend
Usually we just use a bread machine, but the loaves are small. So we found a recipe for basic white that makes four loaves at a time. The recipe warned that it was a moist dough. Did you ever see that episode where Lucy and Ethel are wallpapering? I kinda looked like that after the kneading process -- the dough was stuck all over me despite liberal flouring of my hands.

Turned out to be the best tasting bread (and great looking, too) we've ever had. Downside was that we gave away three of the loaves to friends since we were so pleased with ourselves.

20. Isn't there a Market Basket store near you? Much better deals than Shaws or Hannaford's any day!
Edited on Wed Mar-26-08 07:56 AM by Breeze54
Market Basket is Just Around The Corner

If you shop every two weeks and stock up, you should be able to avoid those prices.

I mean, you can't eat all that cheese in one sitting, can you?

Maybe you shouldn't have bought that much just for a snack?

Just saying. Prices in convenience stores are always inflated.
