My aunt worked at the Douglass aircraft factory in WWII
I just happened to find this picture on the intertubes. I have no idea if it is my aunt, but the caption said "Women workers install fixtures and assemblies to a tail fuselage section of a B-17F bomber at the Douglas Aircraft Company, Long Beach, Calif 1942"

A very, very neat site. They specialize in large-format historical photos.

6. Thanks for sharing this.
My father worked at the Lockheed factory building P-38 planes
before he was a SeaBee in the South Pacific.

The skill of the women pictured was demonstrated by the
performance of the machines they built.

9. We can do it!
I think a "Rosie the Riveter" type movie is long overdue.

That is a very neat picture, and it sounds like your aunt is a big part of history.

16. The role of women in the war industries was covered fairly well
in the movie "Swing Shift" with Goldie Hawn and Kurt Russell. Oh, and an overpoweringly sexy performance by Christine Lahti. It's not a comprehensive look at the topic, but it's pretty good.

11. My Mom used to assemble gun sights for bombadiers.
I wish she could have come of age some other way.

I have never been comfortable with the fact that my parents came of age in war.

War is not noble. It is always terrible.

Even if your aunt isn't in that particular picture, I'd adopt all three of them retroactively. :)

13. How interesting, I was just telling some folks lastnight.

My Mom was a Rosie the Riveter during WWII at the Boeing plant in the midwest, I believe Omaha. I still have her 'crib pin', worn to be able to walk into the plant, plus another Boeing airplane pin that's a kind of rustic looking.

Actually, from the work she performed I think Mom was what we might now call a Material Controller, inventorying the tools and making sure everything was available at each workstation for the ladies to build planes.

Years ago, I found the "We Can Do It" metal plaque and sent it to her.

Sure wish I could ask Mom who she would be backing here in this election. She passed away a couple of years ago, but we could sure have some fun conversations.

My mom was in the Red Cross in India and Burma in 1944 -45. She organized troop recreation centers along the Ledo and Burma Roads.
Died of cancer in 1973. I am constantly thinking of things I would like to talk to her about. Dad too - he died in 1998.

14. One thing about it, the Rosie the Riveters did quality work - showing that women were plenty capable
But, if you think about it - they weren't only holding down a job. Whatever plane they were working on could potentially be transporting their own husbands/fiances/fathers/brothers/uncles, etc. It was a historical moment in U.S. History and they did themselves proud!
