Did anybody see SNL tonight?
They had a skit where Bill Clinton, George W. Bush, John Kerry, and Hillary Rodham met in a bar with Cream's "Sunshine of your Love" playing in the background.

4. SNL is totally Republican
They have totally gone limp on George Bush. Apparently The Daily Show is the only place for consistant humour at the expense of King George. That is so sad. Who cares; their loss. We will rule them. Bite me SNL Repuke writers; you are so -not- where its at!

That said. This SNL with Dru Barrymore was the best in months. Dru is so so so so so zo awesome. She was great in every skit. Did she and Jimmy Falon have it going on or what?

Don't people get tired of calling something that isn't non stop Bush hating "Republican"?

Maybe the reason why SNL went limp on Bush is because Will Ferrell left the show and no one has been able to top his excellent Bush impression (but I think they found their new guy tonight, Will Forte's young Bush was excellent).

BTW, the head "SNL Repuke Writer" is Tina Fey, who usually has several Bush jokes on Weekend Update.

8. After 9/11
SNL changed tone quickly and has since remained limp.

It is understandable--but upon reflection--the writers should realize that the Daily Show is light years ahead of them.

They, like Dennis Miller, have given * a pass. They're past it. Done.

As for Tina Fey...too many "in jokes" and unfunny bits. Furthermore, it would be nice for them to get through a skit w/o laughing. Half the time they're not that funny.

Go Daily Show...hell--Go Mad TV!

10. SNL has been pretty hard on Shrubbie
Its just after Farrell left (ie: this season) that they haven't done any skits with Bush in them since they didn't have anyone who could do a decent impression of Bush.

Weekend Update is always good for at least 2 good Bush slams.

16. Bush is in the White House.....
...and sucks and is ripe for ribbing. SNL has totally lost their "left" wing since Franken left. Lame ass thoughtless charactures are not hard-hitting is not good enough. Crappy impersonations of young drunk Bush are not even funny. The Bush record and the macabre daily horrors from the Iraq, Afghanistan and Palestine are rich picking grounds for pointed relevant biting humor. Like on the Daily Show. Get it?

SNL hasn't been "cutting edge" for years and years. Its sad.

They are supposed to destroy whoever is in the White House. Remember? They are either giving Bush a complete pass, or they have just lost it.

18. If you think SNL gives Bush a pass
Then you must be one of those people who stopped watching SNL 15 years ago and still complain about the current shows.

It seems like most of the cast have tried a Bush impression, but the only times when it's worked, now that Ferrell's left, are voice-overs (Horatio Sanz?). Strange, because Bush has so many quirks that would make him an easy caricature, and some of the cast are pretty talented (I'm trying to be fair here, since most of my favorites have departed ...). I used to think that maybe it was because they needed more experience at portraying older characters, but Hammond can do that, yet still misses on Bush.

I'm not sure how much they can do the "young Bush" (after all, how many stories will have flashbacks?) but this time it worked pretty well -- though a lot of it was just contrasting imaginary "back then" with what we know today about the characters. And somebody's done some homework ... Clinton, Rodham, Kerry, and Bush could just possibly have been at Yale at the same time! (Kerry and Bush were BOTH in Skull and Bones ... that might be one they're saving for later.)

It was kind of weird seeing Seth Meyers play Kerry 30 years apart (in 2 different sketches) but I think he pulled it off.

The intro sketch where Hammond played Gore could have been a lot funnier, though.

19. Al Franken
SNL was more Liberal when Al Franken balanced out the wing-nutter writer who took over completely upon Al's exit. Now it's just crap...it rarely is cutting edge and strains at being humorous.

22. Since I actually know people who write and perform on the show
I can tell you that you are completely wrong. They are neither Republicans nor Democrats. They're comedians and that's a different breed of animal. They are not out to make YOUR political agenda, they are working to make people laugh. Period, end of story. If that requires that they make fun of Democrats as well as Republicans, then they will do that, no matter what their political affiliation.

Having said that, I feel the show is well past it's freshness date, due to upper management's stranglehold on final cut. The have a formulaic view of what works and what doesn't and very little that is outside that box is aired. Which is sad, because they have an amazing amount of talent just sitting there, waiting to be mined.

7. The people on this thread, except bury, must be living in ...
...a different world cuz I thought they made Bush look like an idiot. They essentially called him stupid, a drunk, AWOL, and a cocaine user. And they didn't lay a hand on Kerry except to say he may have had an affair, even tho it was obvious they weren't very serious, and that he's sort of a stiff. I thought they were almost completely onesided, for Kerry. And the jokes they had about Clinton are irrelevant; he's not running - and they sorta made him look cool anyhow. I dunno, sometimes I think people on this site have such a biased perspective they see right-wing bias everywhere, even when it obviously doesn't exist. The SNL audience is made up of people with a variety of political views; I mean, they're, SNL, not working for the DNC. GEEZ.

14. The guy that does Lieberman is very good.
And I think the guy that does Kerry was better tonight; he's got that quick smile down pretty good. Their problem was Bush. They had two other people try him and both didn't really work. But I think they found the answer tonight with Wil Forte. His impression isn't great, but he's funny - and he makes Bush look like a like a complete goof.

17. Funny
I thought it was funny. Loved Clinton's bit. Kerry was pretty lame but so far there isn't much to make fun of with him. Bush could've been better.

All and all not bad

Nah! What was I thinking...no matter what Bush does, nukes the planet, they'll STILL be making Clinton "jokes" that aren't funny.

23. no
the neocons will never understand why we don't foam at the mouth at the mention of a Clinton - ANY Clinton. And now they don't understand why we don't think their Clinton crap is as funny as they do. I think it just shows how pathetic they really are.

24. I could go on and on....
The problem with SNL is not one of political leaning. It's not even talent. It's internal politics combined with rotten writing. The former has it's genesis with Lorne Michaels, the comedy anti-christ, and the latter has a bit to do with the Harvard old boys club that got a strangle hold on the writing staff in the '90's.

Tina Fey is fighting the good fight, but if you'll notice she's no longer the sole head writer. They've partnered her with some guy I've never heard of.

BTW - Watch for Liz Kakowski. She'll be on in the next week or so. Just hired from Second City. I'll personally vouch for her talent and intelligence.

Let's just see what they do with her. May God have mercy on her soul...
