Mardi Gras on the Eastern Shore gets some new rules, designed to add some red, white, and blue to the green, gold and purple.
A new law passed at Monday night's council meeting requires all moon pies thrown from floats be made in the United States. To throw a foreign made moon pie is illegal.
John Gwin, a member of the Daphne City Council: "Well, I'm a firm believer in buy American."
Daphne resident John Coulter tells us he agrees with the idea: "I think we should buy our own products instead of going to some foreign product"
Walk into any Mardi Gras store and boxes piled high of stuffed animals are made in
China. The beads, also clearly labeled. made in
China. T-shirts are made in
El Salvador or Mexico. Authentic shirts with Mardi Gras colors, labeled made in
India. Plastic toys shipped in from
China. Interestingly enough,
most if not all Mardi Gras moon pies are already made in America, and that's the throw the council is targeting.
