but seriously, I can't believe we're not boycotting and believe me when I say that for the very same reasons I wouldn't blame any other country for wanting to boycott if the Olympics were here

2. I'm not sure boycotting does anything really, although I agree China deserves it

However, if I were an athelete who competes in an outdoor sport, I might not be so keen to be exposed to the toxic soup that is the air in Beijing.

3. I know that it would be unfair for the athletes who train so hard to get there

but I think boycotting sends a very strong message of disapproval. I don't know that it would actually work in a difference in Chinese policy, in particular with the violence in Tibet, but I still think it's meaningful to take the high road. On the other hand, the US right now is guilty of all kinds of sins of war crime, torture, human rights violations, poverty, etc. and we'd be pretty hypocritical to boycott when we have so much blood on our hands.
