1. Many theories as to why the number 13 is considered unlucky...
Edited on Sat Apr-05-08 11:08 PM by Solon
The fact that Judas Iscariot was considered the 13th person at the last supper, to the way Lunar calendars were set up. Its still avoided in many instances, no 13th row on Airplanes, and, going back to prehistory, no 13th law in the Code of Hammurabi.

As far as the Number 7, it always had a historic presence, a type of divine number, if you will, and it doesn't really matter what culture we are talking about, from the 7 Gods of good Fortune in Japanese mythology to the 7 Sages of Sumerian folklore. The reason both are considered this way is frankly a mystery.

ON EDIT: Actually, I also forgot to mention the Seven Sages of Greece, of which my namesake on this board was a member, Solon of Athens.

2. 13 were at the table for the Last Supper.
We ALL know how THAT ended up...

That is what I had always heard about why 13 was considered an unlucky number. Should be interesting to hear what the reality is.

3. I just learned that there is no 13th law in the Code of Hammurabi...
That predates the Last Supper by well over a thousand years.
