So I've got DSL now...

The actiontec 1524 I'm leasing has built-in routing and firewall capabilities, but the Netgear device I'd bought is far more configureable and has active alert signals for attempted break-ins. The actiontec device just sits there. But the two don't click, so I'm going to return the 1524 in favor of a basic DSL modem... Hopefully Qwest has a basic modem, without the frills...

I could upgrade to 1.5 down/896k up for only $12 more per month. :9 I might actually do that. It's dedicated speed, comparable to cable, and is $3 less than Comcast's broadband rate (of course, the extra $23 in fees comcast demands is bollocks too...)

Now if only I could extract my password so I can use it in native Linux instead of this emulated Windows session. vmware stinks... can't even use the 2.4.21-166 kernel because vmware locks up. :eyes:

(note, Wine doesn't work well, if at all, with some Windows apps. I've got a graphics processing program I can't live without and it's not happy under Wine. Ditto for the fractal creation program... now if Wine ran Dreamweaver... )

There's lots of speed tests, security tests, kvetching about various ISPs, etc.

around 700-800KB on a reasonably good day. 300KB if the phone company is having hiccups. (rare)

For home and light business use, I can't imagine paying any more for marginally more speed.

The biggest problems I have aren't the actual DL speed, but network congestion, server delays, the browser trsnslating complex webpages & monster graphics, loading helpers and plugins...

I'll DL a 20-30MB file in the time it takes me to refill the coffee cup or call for pizza, but sometimes it takes forever for a DU page to load and the graphics show up.
