Where's Scotty Bowman and Don Cherry!?
Looks like it could be a good series. Of course, I could just be brainwashed by the noise at the Molson Centre.

14. I miss the Whale.
They were a lot of fun to watch, and a cheaper alternative than going to see the Bruins.

The first pro game I ever saw was the New England Whalers, so they were in my blood. :)

4. Back in the Fifties, Detroit and Montreal
A home & home series. The first in Montreal ended with riots in the streets and streetcars burning.

Back in Detroit, there were almost as many cops as fans at Olympia.

One of these games ended in a forfeit win for Detroit when fans set off smoke bombs and the fire marshall cleared the arena.

Those were the days when goalies did not wear a mask. And teams carried only one goalie. Facial cuts from pucks stopped the game while the goalie got stitched and then returned. Detroit had a trainer by the name of Wilson. When the opposing goalie could not return he stood in the nets for Detroit's opponent. Once for Toronto, he beat his own Red Wings 2-1!

Now, that was real hockey!

7. Lefty Wilson
He used to sharpen my skates at Olympia. Seventy-five cents.

Take a look at tonight's playoff game at the Joe. Lotsa empty seats in the lower bowl.

8. You are right!
The game has changed. For the better I think as expansion has brought hockey to the whole of Canada and America. And fighting remains an integral part of the game.

Remember that picture of Terry Sawchuck's face with all the stitches superimposed. Took a special courage to stand in the nets without a mask against shots from the likes of Richard and Howe.

9. Take a look at Ted Lindsay's face.
His face looks like a sculpture with gobs of clay unfinished.

10. good series? it'll be a slaughter
That was a great rivalry back in the day w/ Boston didn't consistently trade away their top scorers. I literally stopped watching them when then traded away Jason Alison.

I see no point in supporting a team that just doesn't have any interest in winning.

so.... go Red Sox.

oh, and for hockey, I've switched to college hockey.

11. Hockey fever - I has it.
Now that I'm in Montreal, a couple of things need to be clarified:

1. The s.o. has been informed that they can leave the f*cking room if hockey is unpalatable because I'm NOT changing the channel. I'm not even muting the commercials.

2. When I can be heard grumbling about "f*cking Russians", it's about the ones who send me 2000 spam emails a day, NOT the ones who play for the Canadiens.

Good game last night, eh.

13. Th B's will be lucky to win a single game in this series.
But it is great to see the matchup anyways. Any time you get two of the original six teams playing it's cool. Sadly for this Bruins fan the Habs have way too much offense for the B's to compete this year.

The Habs and Detroit would make for a cool Final though, and it would be one of the rare times I root for Detroit.

21. Oh come now. I went to a game in an old-timey Wings sweater
At first they pretended my ticket didn't work! Then the guy next to me asked if I was really from Michigan (I am) or if I just jumped on the bandwagon.

It was all in good fun, though. I love going to games in Vancouver, I always have a blast.

And it's strange about the Leafs, I don't like them either.

22. Yeah, and Bobby Orr and Phil Esposito.
Those Bruins-Canadiens games back in the day were incredible. I went to the Stanley Cup parades in Boston in 1970 & '72 and I screamed and cried at "too many men on the ice" in that playoff game in the later seventies, '77 maybe? I have to wonder if the Bruins will ever get their old magic back--sadly, I'm not holding my breath.
